Back in May, I was at the Narrows in Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, eastern Oregon. In these heavily cropped images, you will see a bald eagle that has caught a pintail duck by its legs. Images taken with a Nikon Z9 and the Nikon 600mm f/4 1.4x TC lens, shot wide open at 840mm.

Short-eared Owl, Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Oregon. Images taken 5/14/2026. Where I live, short-eared owls have migrated north by mid-April. I was surprised to find one at Malheur in mid-May. I saw it again the next day (but further out in the fields).

Great quote! That is not Mount Shuksan, however. That central peak is Mount Larrabee, the peak to the left is American Border Peak, and the peaks to the right of Larrabee are the Pleiades. Here is a closer shot (taken from Winchester Mountain). The North Cascades really are wonderful!
Here are a couple more images of a Paddle-tailed Darner Dragonfly, in flight, Fullerton Pond, Barnum Point Preserve, Camano Island, Washington. While the second image was while it was hovering, the first image was during a turn. I could hardly believe that I got that first image in focus.
Paddle-tailed darner dragonfly, in flight, Fullerton Pond, Barnum Point Preserve, Camano Island, Washington. This particular species of dragonfly will periodically hover for several seconds. After observing their flight patterns, it is possible (but still challenging) to catch them in flight.

Seen this afternoon in the Skagit Wildlife Area, near Wiley Slough, Washington State. I think this is a female brown-headed cowbird, but I am not sure. If anyone has any other ideas on what species this might be, I would love to hear your ideas! Thanks!
