#OTD in 1796, Republican marriage between Napoléon Bonaparte and Josephine de Beauharnais at the Hôtel de Mondragon. Napoléon, who arrived late, yelled "marry us quickly!" Fun fact, they both lied on their age to reduce their 6 year age difference to a mere 18 months.

#OTD in 1814, Napoléon defeats the Prussian army under Blücher at Brienne, where he had been a military student in 1779-84. It’s one of Napoléon’s last victories in what will eventually be a losing war. The Campaign of France is recognized as one of his greatest, despite his ultimate defeat.

Napoléon believes that Jacobin extremists are responsible for the attempt, but his chief of police, Fouché, disagrees. He’s sure the Chouans (royalist rebels from Western France) are responsible. He’s right and arrests the responsible men, but Napoléon is not satisfied.
