I've been absently chipping away at this fic for literal years at this point #SwordAndShield

“Collateral damage, maybe.” Her voice dropped lower, smoke and screams and silk and venom, and she guided him along her naked skin, trailing his open hand along the sharp dip of her waist, the brittle indents of her ribcage, the fragile swell beneath the curve of her breast. “Inevitable consequences. But no flaws.”

She maneuvered his hand slowly along her body, finally stopping when she’d coaxed him upwards, pressing to close his palm over her bare breast. With her other hand, she pressed against his chest through the inconsequential fabric of his shirt, feeling out his heartbeat. Aymeric couldn’t read the expression on her face when she measured out what she found there; his accelerated pulse, his shallower breathing. He was helpless in his reaction to being in proximity to her, and she knew it.

She wielded it like a weapon now.

“You’re being cruel,” he reminded her, soft and achingly gentle as he tilted his head down towards her in powerless supplication.

"Do I not have the right to be?" The distance in her gaze was scraping away at something deep within him, something hidden and irreplaceable. "I, of all people?"

Thorne (the Warrior of Light, a green-haired Elezen woman with fair skin and a thorny tattoo slashing over her eye, spattered with blood, dressed in all black armour that is tattered and bloodstained from battle) has been horrifically wounded from her Ultima Thule final conflict, and is bleeding seemingly uncontrollably from wounds at her torso and arms. She is cradled, limp and unconscious, in Aymeric's arms.

He, in turn, kneels on the hard ground with his arms around her, pressing his face into her hair in a seemingly desperate, unanswered plea for her to stay with him, to wake up. Around them, there is a dreamy, undefined and beautifully cloudy lavender landscape, mocking in their shared pain and seeming to imply that all is well; why do you weep, Lord Commander? Your wife has saved the Star, and things will be alright.

Even if it cost her life.

Without looking away from the face of the sleeping hero before him, Emet-Selch used his teeth to pull his glove from his hand, one finger at a time. He bared his skin to the slight chill of the room, and for one breath, two, three, he simply watched her breathe.

Told himself that he cared only for the soul she carried.

Bending low, his body cast a dark shadow over her sleeping form. He could hear her breathing in the stillness, and with unbearable gentleness, he placed his bare fingertips, whisper-soft, on the porcelain skin of her cheek.

And he froze, suspended in time with her.

Aymeric turned to face the sound, still listening to the hushed conversation nearby. It wasn’t the first time he’d heard of the Light Bearer and her legendary feats of bravery. He had noticed, however, that those whispers were starting to fly thick and fast, and on tongues all across Ishgard, both highborn and lowborn alike.

He’d yet to decide if he needed to be concerned or not.

Slowly, in the clear, bright light of the winter sunrise, snow began to drift slowly downwards around them. Widow’s tears, the locals called this weather; snow in sunlight, like ashes scattered after a dragon attack.

Thoughts of those dim whispers of the Warrior of Light followed Aymeric as he passed through the shadow of the gate. As he walked, a breath of winter wind sent a chill down the back of his neck, icy as it raced down the length of his spine.

Like a whisper.

Like a promise.

What was a kiss without a kiss? It was their fingertips touching, their eyes meeting in the half-light, their every imperfection laid bare between them and given to the other to protect. It was her gently brushing his dark hair away from his eyes as she’d pictured doing a thousand times before, letting her hands linger on his skin as she watched unknown emotions play out behind his eyes. It was him stretching his arm out so that she could pillow her head on it, so close that only the barest amount of restraint kept their lips from meeting as they continued to talk quietly.

They didn’t sleep, and they didn’t look away, and when morning came, something would be irreversibly changed.

What are we doing? She didn’t ask, despite knowing he was asking the same. This is too dangerous.

Too dangerous, and far, far too late.

It ended with red and white.

When dawn finally broke over the pure white snowpeaks of Ishgard, it was with a blinding red glow that lit spectacularly across the sky and promised violent storms later in the day. There was a war on.

They were the Warrior of Light and the Lord Commander, with responsibilities, obligations, and innocents relying on them.

They had been indulgent.

They couldn’t allow this again.
