Uruguayans would live through 12 years of dictatorship during which many of the basic liberties they had been proud of, were suspended. Dissidents were imprisoned, tortured and disappeared. Democratic order was restored in 1985
The President did not take up the Navy's offer and the crisis was de-escalated, paving the way for his dissolution of Congress on 27 June, after which he remained in office but with the military firmly in control of the country. (Military commanders seen below in Congress).
This pact causes a fracture within the armed forces, with Navy in particular opposing it by barricading the Old City quarter and harbour of Montevideo, deploying warships to the with guns pointed at the city, and offering the President refuge in the area they control.
Despite this military success, in early 1973, President Bordaberry meets with military leaders and an agreement is reached whereby the military will have a longer term role in running the country. Some historians have pointed to this event as the true coup d'etat.
The declaration allows for the army to take a more direct role in fighting the insurgency and this they do with deadly effect by the middle of the year, the MLN is effectively destroyed operationally
President Bordaberry becomes a key figure in Uruguay's transition to dictatorship and following some high profile violence between the military, police, death squads and the MLN, communist party and others, a State of Internal War is declared later in 1972
By the late 60's the unrest and violence led to increased government repression and in the 1971 elections Juan María Bordaberry was elected with a promise of "mano dura" (heavy hand) for dealing with the urban terror campaign
A series of events starting at least in the 1950's, led to the coup and these included economic decline, a campaign of violence led by a Marxist revolutionary group (the MLN, Tupamaros), the violence and repression of elected government reaction to that political violence.
It marked clearly the beginning of a period of military dictatorship that would last 12 years and was no question a significant date to many Uruguayans that had witnessed, or chose to ignore, backsliding of freedoms in previous years.
The event that @ruthbenghiat.bsky.social mentioned was the 27 June 1973 coup, an event that shocked many Uruguayans in and outside the country. It marked the suspension of democracy that had been in place for most of the 20th century in the small Latin American Republic
A mob attacking the US government seemed crazy until it wasn't yet many observers warned that it was going in that direction and eventually imminent. It's the same with actions against Canada We must continue to prepare for many scenarios.
As with previous examples it's too easy to laugh this off but something serious is behind it - the weaponization of every disagreement or point of friction is becoming an open invitation for radicalized individuals and groups to take matters into their own hands against Canada.
The sense of urgency with which increased military spending is happening is for a reason. The hopefully soon to be announced increase in the reserve force will be needed for what's coming. There's a lot that can happen between where we are and full scale invasion, ask Ukraine
Are Belgium waffles about to be renamed Freedom Waffles in the US? 😂
And for good reason - our security relationship with the US going forward will contain both a partnership in continental defence as well as threats and vulnerabilities from that neighbour (invasion being for now, the least likely) Complicated, interesting times.. 2/
That pushback will require a sustained increase in defence spending along with Canadians taking on the "all of society" approach to physical defence of our territory with measure we should be hearing about soon... We need to consider what role we can play as individuals
Fuerza Aérea Hondureña F-5E/F Tiger II's, four of which were returned to service in 2024 remain active tasked primarily with intercepting narcotics flights. Originally delivered in the 80's they among the few legacy, un-modernized Tiger II's in service globally.
Happy Canada Day - today we celebrate our beautiful, free and independent country! 🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦❤️💪🏻
Several days now into America's War on Algae and the brave warriors involved in this noble cause need to be in our thoughts and prayers 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Don't hold back the machines because of those pesky humans!
Private armed militias have been active on the US/Mexico border for decades but that's a much more fortified line and with no claim to Mexican territory. The northern border has many natural barriers but many wide open spaces and danger of a radicalized group or individual taking action is real 2/
You do not counter an angry populist, rabble-rousing movement with gentlemanly conduct. You have to shove the s*** right back in their face Maga and centrist/left Americans need to know that this thing is for real. 2/
The news itself is not surprising at this point but the comments from obvious bots and trolls have a common line: Canada's military can only be of worth as a branch plant of the US military/industrial complex. Recognize the propaganda when you see it👇🏻
Any student of military aviation history soon comes to at least one conclusion: Poland has a proud heritage of brave airmen who defended their nation - today they are a pillar of Western, democratic air power. www.euronews.com/video/2026/0...
Absolutely, in the Middle East @malcolmnance.bsky.social has referred to a similar thing as "kids with goats" the eyes and ears of the region, an absolute human intel asset.
The Chief of the Defence staff, Gen. Carignan has repeatedly spoken of "resilience" in any future crisis and that also translates into a household preparedness. There are many options you can pursue as a citizen. 2/
The online propaganda campaign against Canada will not let up, don't wait for it to. It's organized and well funded and probably goes right to the top. Spend less time fretting and more time thinking of what role you can play is resisting this, including if it goes kinetic at some point.
