NEVAEH

Salix laughs, a hideous sound like snapping branches.

SALIX

No, no! You're worthless to me dead, child. What I want is possession of your body for three-hundred and sixty-five consecutive days, after which you will have it returned. Sound fair?

NEVAEH

But what will happen to me during...?

SALIX

You'll have no memory of it. Will be but the blink of an eye!

NEVAEH

Okay... but I want some conditions. I know how this works-- you want to use this to trick me.

SALIX

This is not a trick. It's a negotiation, so state your conditions.

NEVAEH

Alright... you can't commit any crimes or do anything illegal with my body-- no murder, or stealing, or hurting anyone else. And you can't make any permanent changes to me. No tattoos, piercings, selling my organs...

SALIX

You're taking away all the fun, but I agree to adhere to your rules as stated.

NEVAEH

And you leave my mother alone. She can't know about any of this. You can't call her or contact her, ever.

SALIX

If that is all you request of me, then I believe we have a deal. One year and your mother's life restored to normal.

NeVAEH

Okay...

In the reflection in the mirror, Salix extends the approximation of a human-shaped hand.

Nevaeh holds out her own, trembling hand.

NEVAEH

When will the year start?

Salix snatches Nevaeh's hand like a viper striking it's prey.

SALIX

Now.

Everything goes BLACK.

INT. SHITTY MOTEL ROOM - DAY

Nevaeh's eyes snap open. She sees a dingy popcorn ceiling where a light fixture full of dead bugs glows.

She groans, struggles to sit up. When her trembling hands clutch the very pregnant belly protruding from her filthy shirt she screams.

And screams.

And screams, until the horror teeters over into sobs.

Nevaeh hyperventilates as she wipes her tears.

Emotionally spiraling, she looks around the room--

King bed.

At the foot of the bed rests a cell phone and wallet.

Nevaeh snatches the phone, then laughs a manic, reassuring laugh when she sees the photo of she and her mother glowing on the home screen.

She hits the contact for MOM.

Sam Bruns is a lifelong Special Olympics athlete and a phenomenal artist. Sam has a medical issue that is hindering her ability to eat or drink. She is currently being treated at Mayo Clinic.

Just given the premise of LAST LAUGH, a lot of Josh's dialog ends up being monologues. But would be a great role for someone who really wants to be just the worst fucker ever. Don't worry, he gets what's coming to him.

He gestures to the cameras and mirrored walls.

JOSH

Good thing, too, because the ratings for this two-bit reality show have been in the shitter for years! First order of business was to make some major upgrades-- optimize the tech, fire some redundant employees, but most importantly: make you the star of this season. Just think of all the fun we're going to have!

Josh faces Olivia, gazes into her eyes.

JOSH (CONT'D)

You probably won't believe it, but this is my first time actually inside Freeman. That's right, I'm losing my "Freeman Virginity" to you.

Josh leans on the table, runs his fingers over the surface.

Before now, I never understood the appeal of this show. Pay money to fuck with people for a few hours? Sounds pretty cringe, but you, Olivia... you're the only person I want to fuck with. Remember what I told you: I don't get even, I get ahead. How about we take a test drive?

Josh stands behind Olivia, holds his arms out.
