Here a photo of the end of the valley. It also ends our scorching hot day. Time for some sushi as it’s just too hot for anything else 🥵 #cropmap26
When I last visited here in 2023 this was a thriving hops farm. x.com/leandercampb... Now the only hops are rogue volunteers growing up some of the support poles. Looks like the downturn in hop market pricing has hit hard here🥺 #cropmap26 #BCag #CdnAg
Due to the geographical isolation of the Pemberton Valley it is an ideal spot for seed potatoes. Limited pest & disease stressors combined with strict controls allow these potatoes to be shipped to growers across western Canada. #cropmap26 #BCag #CdnAg
Just past Pemberton on Hwy 99 there is a fruit & veggie farm with a large variety of offerings to both locals & vacationers. #cropmap26 #BCag #CdnAg
Arrived to Pemberton by mid afternoon. The valley had a haze of wildfire smoke that partially obscured the mountains in the distance. #cropmap26
Day 3 of #cropmap26 has us departing Nanaimo via ferry. Once across it’s an afternoon drive up the mountains to Pemberton where we will visit farms in this isolated valley. There is an active wildfire that we are monitoring across the highway from the town so hopefully it stays put over there 🤞
Finally just north of Courtenay/Comox on my left was a large grass field ready for another drink. While on my right the barley looked almost ready to harvest. #cropmap26 #BCag #CdnAg
There’s lots of corn growing to support the dairy industry on Vancouver Island. Most of it looks very good including this field south of Oyster River that must be pushing 9ft (2.7m) in height. #cropmap26 #BCag #CdnAg
After a 3hr delay waiting for a new car, we passed this large blueberry & raspberry operation in Qualicum Beach. Our spring satellite image didn’t show the hoop houses. So they were erected at a later date. I wonder how long (& how many people) that would take.🧐 #cropmap26 #BCag #CdnAg
How the day went & how it’s ending😅 Tip 1: ensure your rental has ALL the tools to change a flat Tip 2: Budget rental at YVR is under a different corporate structure to local spots. Therefore you can’t easily get a replacement car direct from the nearest location🙄
Day 2 of #cropmap26 has us head north from Victoria driving the eastern coast up towards Campbell River*. We’ll double back down to Nanaimo for the night. *Best name for a river in Canada #NoBias 😅
Off the ferry & on Vancouver Island we ran in to some young purple cabbage near North Saanich. #cropmap26 #BCag #CdnAg
On Westham Island some of the farms had signs saying what was in the field. No complaints from me! 😁 #beetroot #cropmap26 #BCag #CdnAg
As the black silage wagon nears being full; the yellow one (on their right) is ready to roll in. #teamwork #cropmap26 #BCag#CdnAg
Trying to figure out where the next piece of the jigsaw puzzle goes…😁 Constructing a new greenhouse in Delta, BC #cropmap26 #BCag #CdnAg
Just hanging out, keeping an eye on those juicy highbush blueberries #cropmap26 #BCag #CdnAg
Potato fields in Richmond. Growing for the local roadside market. #cropmap26 #BCag #CdnAg
On the road again for #cropmap26. In BC this week, today we are looking at fields in the Surrey, Richmond & Delta areas before taking an afternoon ferry over to Vancouver Island, then working around Victoria. #BCag #CdnAg
Nice to see some BC berries here in Ontario. It’s appropriate since I fly out there tomorrow for my next #cropmap26 tour. I’ll see Meadow Berry Farms personally on Thursday!
Shout out to my #cropmap26 partner this week, Karina! Currently at the University of Guelph working towards her Masters in Physics, she is part of an AAFC group looking at quantum computing. However as is my understanding, there exists a reality where you already knew this…😛
I can’t leave #PEI & not have one post about potatoes. Here’s a look at a few fields we encountered. There is a wide range of development happening. Some are just getting planted now while others are already flowering. #cropmap26 #CdnAg
Rows of soybeans emerging from their ground cover. Hard to tell from this distance what exactly the cover crop is/was. Winter rye or ryegrass perhaps? 🤷♂️ #PEI #cropmap26 #CdnAg
A field of peas near Grand River. Probably destined for animal feed given the nearby farms. #Nutritious #PEI #cropmap26 #CdnAg
The old veteran standing at the ready… #White5542 #PEI #cropmap26 #CdnAg
Surprised to find some veggie fields in the middle of Summerside #PEI #cropmap26 #CdnAg
#cropmap26 is westward bound as we travel to PEI's west coast on our final day.
Must have been a sale on grain bins on Amazon…😁 #SeeingMultiples #PEI #cropmap26 #CdnAg
