It's a bit of a trope: showing that someone is good at command by having someone question them. They did it later with Data and with Troi.

I agree on the need for budget scale-back, but this is the main set of the latest Star Trek show. I don't find this visually gorgeous, it's cluttered and weirdly impersonal.

Because I like the character, I just wanted to get back to the moment when Vash was sitting in Picard's chair, showing her legs. When she did that, she was playfully insulting, that was the point of this scene. It was playful exactly because she isn't the captain. There is nothing funny about Ake.
