Hi #birdoftheday pals! Per @alan678.bsky.social there are so many lovely #bestfootforward and #asplashofcolor photos! Fun! Here is a semipalmated plover putting its #bestfootforward along the New Jersey shore.

A small shorebird at the center of the photo walks toward the camera with one orange leg raised. This plover has a round white belly, a black neck ring, brown back and top of head, and a black face/eye ban that extends back from its orange and black bill.
Dark green water dotted with ripples fills the blurred background. The bird is walking on a sandbar with one leg raised, approaching a blob of orange and brown seaweed with dark shells to the left. More water shimmers at the bottom of the frame in the foreground.

Hello #birdoftheday friends! Wonderful photos today for @helenbennett.bsky.social's fun theme! I'm offering a photo I'll call #DownyFeathers with Grump Face, aka Great Tit chick.

A fledgling songbird clings to a stick of wood in the foreground center, surrounded by brown leaves, with green leaves visible near the top of the frame. The chick has a black head with white visible at the back, white cheek, black wings and back, and a small black bib. It's breast is fuzzy yellow, with some black visible at the center. It's wing and tail feathers are spikey, not fully feathered. It's bright yellow gape forms a grumpy frown.

Hello #birdoftheday peeps! I'm enjoying all of the #longlegs per @robcrank68.bsky.social's theme today. Here are some #longlegs x2 - 2 strolling jabiru storks in Brazil.

Two large white storks with black heads and necks and a red band at the base of their throats stroll in step, each with a black foot lifted. They are on light foreground and midground sand, with a puddle between them. Behind them are leaves of riverine shrub.

Hello #birdoftheday friends! Beautiful #BestofJuly photos per @robcrank68.bsky.social! I'm sharing a photo that is a setting: my local protected patch of migrant bobolinks. Here are a few remaining bobolinks, mostly fledgelings, getting ready to head off to S. America. Feel free to zoom closer.

Well I do appreciate the SEEK app, but THIS was not my fav nature observation of the day...

In the left circle is my photo of an insect, mostly black with white spots, crawling on a stem of multiflora rose. It is an early stage nymph of an invasive spotted lanternfly, which is actually a plant hopper that can spread and harm saplings and vines. The adult specimen photo, a flying insect with gray, red, black, and blue wings with black spots is in the circle on the right.

Hello, #birdoftheday friends! Thanks to Rob for offering #corvidae and #bluesky for today's themes. Here's a pic taken at my local haunt of corvids at work--two bluejays harassing an American kestrel against a clear November sky. Thanks to all for your fantastically personable offerings today!

A songbird-sized raptor, the American kestrel, perches at the top of a thin, bare snag - dead wood - against a clear blue sky. It's speckled white breast, grey-blue cap, red legs and tail in shadow are visible as the bird stares straight at the camera. Two bluejays, one on each side of the snag flap around the kestrel as they dive-bomb it and try to scare it away.

Hello #birdoftheday peeps! I'm loving all these #newlife and #birds&flowers pictures! Here's a northern parula enjoying some insect-filled spring blossoms.

A small, blue and white warbler with splashes of reddish orange, rust and yellow perches on a crooked branch of an ornamental pear tree that is covered in white spring blossoms. The bird faces left, with body tilted at a slight downward angle toward the tip of its sharp bill. The northern parula's white eyelines can be seen above and below its black eye. It's folded wings sport white and black patches.

Deep summer-blue sky behind a criss-cross of thin branches. Nearly mid frame, a bird perches on a diagonal branch that leans up and left. The bird has a yellow belly, white undertail coverts, and a blush pink breast and neck. It's black bill, eyes, and point of crest are just visible, pointing upward.

A large black bird preens with one webbed foot scratching its neck while perched on a large rock known as a sea stack off the coast of northern California. The grey-brown sea stack, filling most of the bottom and left of the frame, is decorated with white streaks of guano from the visits of many seabirds. Grey water is visible on the lower right, and a blurred background rises in the distance with soft greens, purples and browns.

Hello #birdoftheday fans! Loving all of your finch and #bathtime photos thanks to @robcrank68.bsky.social! Here's a catbird splashing it up in our garden birdbath.

In the center of the frame a large songbird splashes in a copper water bath on a post. The bird, facing left, is blue-grey with a darker cap, it's wings partially raised while it splashes. Water droplets can be seen in front of the background of spear-shaped green iris leaves, and the feathery leaves of a salvia with red and white tiny flowers known as "hot lips" salvia. Green ground cover and another leafy plant can be seen farther into the background on the right.

Hello #birdoftheday compatriots! So happy to share my most recent #lifer per today's theme offered by @alan678.bsky.social! So many lifers for my first chance at birding in Europe. My final lifer was this great spotted woodpecker I followed in Den Haag on May 10.

A large woodpecker with a straight silver-black bill, red undertail coverts, and striking black and white markings climbs the left side of a thick limb that stretches from the bottom near left to top right of frame. The limb has a gash of green/grey along it. Overexposed sky through green leaves fill the background.

Hello #birdoftheday pals! Per @robcrank68.bsky.social and all of your posts, I'm sharing this rather #rotund white-throated sparrow perched outside my office window this past winter.

On a white background of winter snow striped with light brown twigs angling from bottom left to top right, the twigs sparsely decorated with evergreen bay leaves, a plump white-breasted, white-throated sparrow clings to a branch in the foreground. The bird has a silver beak, brown wings with two white wing bars, a brown tail, and sports dark brown stripes on its head interspersed with white strips that show some yellow near the eyes and crown.

Hello, #birdoftheday friends! Busy week and now enjoying all of your offerings per @alan678.bsky.social's prompt! Here's my #greyday crowned chat-tyrant giving us the side-eye from Colombia.

Perched on a moss-covered branch that stretches from bottom left to mid right frame, a bird with a round, grey belly faces forward with one eye trained on the camera. The crowned chat-tyrant has a semicircle of white feathers showing on its underparts. Its bib is a slightly lighter grey, and its face slightly darker. A white circlet eye brown crowns its head, which is black at the cap. The background is a blurred melange of green, peach, light brown and white.

Hello #birdoftheday pals! Finding a nice picture of #redbeaks was more of a challenge than I thought it would be so bravo to all of you and to @robcrank68.bsky.social for the theme! Here's my favorite picture of one of our flashier common local birds, a northern cardinal.

Bright red northern cardinal perches on a curved bramble shoot in the middle of the photo, facing right. It's back and tail are slightly darker red, and it wears a black mask on its eye, that rings its stout, short beak. Tiny green leaves just beginning to turn yellow and brown decorate more bramble shoots to fill the lower two-thirds of the frame. The top third is a blurred background of autumn colors.

Hello #birdoftheday peeps! For today's #raptors theme offered by @alan678.bsky.social (so many great photos already shared!) I'm sharing a crested caracara from Brazil's Pantanal.

A large brown raptor, a crested caracara, is perched on a limb in the center of the photo, surrounded by many vertical bare, light brown and grey branches dotted with dark green leaves with a white sky behind. It's body faces nearly backward, but he raptor swivels, staring straight at the camera. It's neck sports yellow feathers, it's heavy hooked bill is framed by bright red skin, and its dark brown crest is just visible behind its head, streaming toward the background.

Happy #WorldOceansDay, #birdoftheday friends! Thanks to @alan678.bsky.social for the reminder to honor how critical our #oceans are to all life on our planet. Here is a colony of storm petrels from Genovesa Island, #Galápagos that depends on their livelihood from the surrounding Pacific Ocean.

More than fifty silhouettes of small flying birds are seen moving in a seeming frenzy above a grey ocean streaked with three lighter bands of water, and a grey blue sky at the top of the frame. A dark band on the bottom of the frame is the lava rock shore of a volcanic island.
