Here in the Portland metro region, a lot of us change our party affiliation to Dem a few weeks before the spring primary, so we can vote for those candidates. Then we switch it back to another of the 12 options in Multnomah County before the general. We certainly ain't centrists!
It’s Christmas in May today! Now I’m off to burn all my other totes, per my contract with @theonion.com.
2026 Easter eggs. Used the regular lineup to make dyes: red cabbage, red beets, turmeric, onion skins. Started with pale blue eggs laid by my rad lil Americana hen.
Great turnout in Vancouver BC for #nokings aka #notyrants rally. Children of a common mother, all fighting fascism and war. I’m so grateful for our Canadian allies.
Great piece! Also worth noting the total bargain that is transit in Riga. A 5 day pass costs only €10 and works on trams and buses. And yes, parking in the city center is wildly expensive. Amazing country, eager to go back.
Did someone say DINAR?? Evangelical preppers in SE Missouri were big into that scam a decade+ ago. Found several bags of them with homemade affidavits of authenticity in my dad's basement safe a few years ago, along with his (now depleted) silver stash.
Hey Portland…the city can grant a permanent Arts Tax exemption for anyone aged 70+ whose income is strictly social security. It’s hard to find this info but I called and asked about my Dad, who is on Medicaid LTC, and they mailed this form. Even $35 is too much for poor folks.
It’s really easy to cancel your (decade-long) sustainer membership. Just call the highlighted number below and a nice person will take care of it right away. You can tell them why. For me: Hush cancel, replacing @theworld.org with NYT shows, and shitty mgmt. I’ll be supporting journos directly now.
Finally gonna see Pavement, thanks to the spouse and his competitive ticket purchasing skills! Hope Rev Hall adds a Sun show for everyone who was shut out this morning.
My heart wasn't shredded enough by the Jayne doc so I also watched "It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley" on HBO. My god, that voice. Phew. So after surviving a near drowning last month (fucking Florida), I have a new perspective on his death that feels sort of comforting, whether it's accurate or not.
Watched "My Mom Jayne" on HBO this week and it completely floored me. I was glad that I knew next to nothing about Jayne Mansfield's life (or death), because the twists & turns really did a number on my heart. (complimentary) Keep thinking of parallels to Paul Reubens' life. Just extraordinary.
Ok but does your grocery store chain mail you a special alpaca wool gift every December because you spend a wild amount of money there? This year it's a LAPTOP BAG. Previous years: tote bag, backpack, scarf. (Fingers crossed for leg warmers next year.) Thanks, Natural Grocers!
Ok but does your investment firm send out holiday cards featuring quotes from Nick Cave?
100% agree! Also the Yoshida Chizuko works are jaw dropping. Can’t wait to go back and hit all the rooms I didn’t have time for tonight.
Ya know what, Eleanor? My husband Sean and I would both love to vote for Zohran, but we haven't lived in NYC since May 2008. This annual tradition of getting NYC voting reminder texts, despite being registered in WA & then OR for the last 17+ years, is kinda cute but also, bro. WTF.
It's labor of love season, aka time to make Kachka's borsch recipe, featuring short ribs from our beef plug www.mountain-beef.com. Does it take all day? Yes. Is it incredibly delicious? Also yes.
It took some effort (my browsers' ad blockers were preventing the page from loading), but I canceled my MFing Hulu/Disney+ sub. Eat it, corporate overlords.
Hey PPS (and other school districts)…time to move the first day of school to mid-September to avoid early dismissals due to increasingly hot Augusts? (Assume there’s no money for heat pumps.) God we are cooked.
Spotted these cuties in Woodstock (PDX) tonight. Why am I constantly fantasizing about vintage cars that undoubtedly suffer from maintenance issues?
"Oregon had just 10 publicly traded companies. Here’s what their CEOs took home:"
Not me crying while playing a quick round of GeoGuessr, as I realize I've been dropped on the stunning west coast of the south island of Aotearoa/NZ. Those tree ferns are a dead giveaway (plus a Salvation Army sign with the city name, heh).
