THE ETHICAL TEACHINGS OF JESUS

The historical Jesus that we encounter in the four Gospels of the Christian New Testament was not, of course, a philosopher. However, because of the profound influence of His ethical teachings on our civilization, we need to at least briefly consider them. You don't have to believe that Jesus was God incarnate in order to recognize the impact of his ethical teachings on Western Civilization. So, let's take a look at His ethical teachings beginning with that teaching that is easy to understand and universally applicable. Jesus is credited with teaching the practical, moral principal that comes closest to being universal both in its relevance and in its invention. In Christianity, this principle is called "The Golden Rule", It says ""Do onto others, as you would have others do unto you". Confucius said, ""Don't do to others, want you would not want them to do onto you'. This very pragmatic moral teaching exists in slightly different wordings in all human civilization. However, beyond this practical and universally applicable moral rule, we can say that Jesus' ethical teachings were love based, altruistic, and radical

LOVE: He said that the teachings of earlier Jewish scripture could be boiled down to two commandments: Love God and love your neighbor as yourself. He commanded his disciples to love
one another, and even went as far as saying that we should love our enemies

ALTRUISTIC (selfless): He taught that if someone steals your coat, you should give them your shirt
as well. He taught that if someone is despitefully using you, you should pray for them. That in order to
enter the Kingdom of Heaven you must die to the self and be born again

RADICAL: After reading the above, I believe that I don't have to say anything else to convince you
that his ethical teachings were radical. Yes?!

I feel like this essay question from my ethics class final sums up pretty well how ridiculous this class was. I took this class to learn about ethics. Instead this man was constantly talking about his political identity and Christianity as ethical points of refrences. This HAS to be unethical.

Essay question worth 30 points. "Why can we say that Jesus' central ethical teachings were love-based, altruistic and radical? How can an understanding of Jesus' central proclamation of the coming of "the kingdom of God", and the importance he put on "the heart" help us to understand his radical ethical teachings?

What do you consider to be the most valuable teachings in this ethics class? How will you apply them in your life?"
