Leo Eloesser was born #otd in San Francisco, 1881. He studied music at UC Berkeley before he studied medicine in Germany. He returned to the US in 1909 and became an important thoracic surgeon based at Stanford. He was a physician to labor leader Thomas Mooney and Frida Kahlo.

ALB volunteer Boris Zaslovsky was born #OtD in Chicago, 1911. He worked as a printer, was a member of the CP and AFL, served in the ALB in the Service Sanitaire in Hospital Casa Roja, and returned to the US in October 1938 aboard the Ile de France.

Joseph Lafayette Young was born #otd in Bellefonte, PA, 1914. He left to become a sailor and joined the YCL by 1933. He sailed for Spain on February 20, 1937 and served with ALB until he was captured at Gandesa on April 2, 1938. Joseph returned to the US on September 5, 1939

Samuel Lissitz was born #otd in Chicago, 1910. He arrived in Spain on April 24, 1937 and returned to the US on December 20, 1938. He also went by the name Bob Cole and later served in the US Army during WWII. He worked as a healthcare administrator in the Pacific and Midwest.

Henry George was born #otd in Huntsville, 1906. A member of the CPUSA and WAA, he was a sign painter in Philadelphia when he arrived in Spain on July 5, 1937. He served with ALB as a clerk and cook from Quinto to Ebro. He returned to the US on December 15, 1938.

Salaria Kea was born #otd in Milledgeville, 1913. Raised in Akron, she faced racial discrimination. She sailed for Spain on March 27, 1937, serving as the only African American nurse. She was WIA at the Villa Paz Hospital, returning to the US on May 16, 1938. albavolunteer.org/2022/02/sala...

William Baker Kwanaekoa was born #otd in Honolulu, 1909. He served in the Coast Guard before he worked as a deep sea diver, sailor, and Teamsters truck driver. He arrived in Spain on August 19, 1937 and was WIA in the jaw at Brunete. He returned to the US on December 20, 1938.

Elijah Joseph Taylor Jr. was born #otd in Griffin, GA, 1907. He joined the YCL in 1934 and worked as a machinist. He arrived in Spain on June 20, 1937 and served with ALB. He was WIA twice and returned to the US on December 20, 1938. He later served in the US Army during WWII.

Sidney Bassin was born #otd in NYC, 1910. He worked as a traveling salesman and joined the CPUSA in April 1937. He arrived in Spain by June 22, 1937 and served with ALB as a driver until he returned to the US on December 20, 1938.

Abraham Albert Koslow was born #otd in Brooklyn, 1909. He was an organizer with the Unemployed Councils in Brooklyn before he arrived in Spain on February 20, 1937. He was WIA on April 18, 1937 and returned to the US by September 12, 1937. He later served in the US Army in WWII.

Basilio Curtis Obret was born #otd in Marianao, Havana, 1898. He relocated to US in 1920, playing baseball in the Negro National League. A member of the Cuban Workers Club & CPUSA, he arrived in Spain on February 4, 1937. He passed away on May 8, 1959 in Cuba, after the successful Cuban revolution.

Lazar Leo Gordon was born #otd in NYC, 1909. He worked as a teacher and joined the CPUSA in 1933. He arrived in Spain on April 15, 1937 and served with ALB as a commissar. He returned to the US on February 4, 1939. He continued to work as a teacher until his unexpected passing on December 11, 1969.

Rose Freed (left, next to Langston Hughes) was born #otd in NYC, 1911. She worked as a lab tech and microbiologist before she sailed for Spain on January 16, 1937. She joined the PCE in May 1937 and served with the AMB until she returned to the US on August 27, 1938.

Toby Jensky was born #otd in NYC, 1911. A nurse at Beth Israel, she sailed for Spain on April 14, 1937. She served with the AMB until she returned to the US on May 9, 1938. She continued to work as a nurse at Beth Israel until she retired, asissting Fredericka Martin with research until the 1980s.

Michael Antonio Papadopullo was born #otd in Watertown, 1913. He went by Nick Pappas when he arrived in Spain on February 19, 1937. Nick served with ALB as an officer in a machine gun company and as an instructor. He returned to the US on September 26, 1938.

Fred Paul Keller was born #otd in NYC, 1913. He attended Columbia for two years while he worked as a driver and mechanic. He was a member of the ALP before he sailed for Spain a day after he turned 24. He served with ALB as a commissar and joined the PCE. He was WIA at Ebro.

Fredericka Imogen Martin was born #otd in Cooperstown, NY (1905). A nurse at Crotona Park Hospital, she left for Spain on Jan. 16, 1937, serving as Chief Nurse with the first AMB group. She returned to the U.S. on Jan. 26, 1938, ultimately settling in Mexico where she lived until her death in 1993.

The great wartime correspondent Martha Gellhorn reflects on knowing who to support in the Spanish Civil War after reading about Spain in the newspapers of Nazi Germany. She would later travel to Spain, writing seven dispatches from July 17, 1937 to November 1938.

After college, David worked as a logger and forester with the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Chippewa National Forrest. He joined the CP in 1936.

Bruno Charles Agostini was born on May 28 in Italy. Records about his birth year are inconsistent, stating that he was born in either 1895 or 1915, which would have made him either 22 or 42 when he went to Spain. Bruno lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, where studied at the the University of Cincinnati.

Vernon Snow was born #otd in Virginia, 1907. He joined the CPUSA in 1935 and was living in DC before Spain. Vernon worked as a radio repairman and in electrical communications and served in the Naval Reserve. He sailed for Spain on May 4, 1937, aboard the Berengaria.
