I am an extremely good writer.

I’d forgotten how unnerving it was to suffer under Zell’s scrutiny. It was like his eyes could peel back my skin layer by layer, stripping me down to the bone until I was only a skeleton. Then, he could reach between my ribs and grasp my soul to peel like an orange, and then he’d eat it, I guess. This metaphor has gotten away from me.

Bad times in the town of Baikal.

“We think the ritual will kill the victim.”

“Ah,” I said. So if Glory catches us, it’s death no matter what. Good to know. “I assume the rest of the town doesn’t know about any of this?”

“They don’t.” Shaul moved over to the wall and leaned his back against it, committing himself to facing me. “They basically worship her as a goddess. She’s been ‘mayor’ for generations, maybe centuries. Anybody who would even dare question her… disappears. At best.”

I chewed on the inside of my cheek and thought about how tired Assata had looked.

“So the people down here, and anyone else helping them, they’re risking a lot, huh?” I asked.

Shaul nodded. “If any of them were caught, their families would be punished, too.”

Our heroes met an ancient sapient fungal network without a name and so Sal named it Party Animal.

I clenched my teeth and went next, but also tested the tendrils with one foot first. They were surprisingly solid, and Party Animal kept them still. I focused on one tendril in particular and walked across that, one foot right in front of the other, arms out for balance. Eko hopped forward and grabbed me before I was all the way off the fungal bridge.

“I’m okay, I’m okay!” I said as they pulled me away from the chasm.

They nodded while giving me a severe “I can’t believe we’re doing any of this” look. I grimaced back and shrugged. We were way past turning back now.

Everyone crossed fine, of course, and Party Animal gathered itself on the edge of the cavern, shifting all over as though it was nervous.

“Oh, I can bring you something to eat!” Shaul chirped, eyes brightening. “We’ve got soup, I can bring you some soup!”

“We already ate,” Ray said sharply. Shaul deflated.

“Speak for yourself,” I said. The excitement came back a little.

“I’ll get it.” He jumped up and rushed around the table, catching his foot on a chair leg and stumbling a little as he ran, but recovering.

“Thank you for all your help, Shaul,” Assata called after him.

“Yea-, yep, no, no problem! Yep.” He threw a wave and disappeared down a tunnel.

Her worst moment... so far!

There were a few more quiet seconds, and then the sound of Eko getting to their feet. I stayed where I was, not sure I had the strength to get up again. The pain in my wounds settled into a steady throb as I waited for Zell to return. I tried not to think of anything, letting my eyes unfocus and losing my sense of time, but then there was nothing for my attention but the burning, aching, and bleeding.

I thought of Ray, but that brought a different, unbearable ache. Physical pain was better.

I tried casting my mind’s eye over my life before coming to this place. It had been so small, my enemies’ ambitions petty, their abuse restrained by necessity. I’d loved once, and had my heart broken when the village minister finally caught me with his sweet but rebellious daughter. I remembered the taste of her, the pleasures we’d discovered together, the hay in her matching hair.

Fuck almighty, I might never orgasm again. Whatever Zell wanted with me, I doubted I would have a waking moment without pain before he finished me off.

Would you care for some wordplay? I've shared this scene before but it's one of my favorites.

She lifted her chin. “Anyway, we cannot desert our cause now. We have not even reached the proper desert yet. If we did desert, I am sure we would receive our just desserts.”

I peered at Tanya’s stoic face with a wide grin growing on mine.

“Can we just get some dessert before we start crossing the desert?” I asked.

“I do not know what kind of desserts they make out here,” she replied without missing a beat. “I would need to see some desert dessert certification.”

“I’m not sure we need more des-certification right now.”

The moonlight flashed off Tanya’s glasses as a hint of a smirk emerged from hiding. “The desertification of desserts would be more painful than a thousand desert crossings, for sure.”

“Those would be the most unjust desserts,” I agreed. “No one deserves that.”

“What are you two whispering about?” Ray hissed.

I flinched at my sister’s rare sneakery, but Tanya didn’t.

“We were discussing the certification of just desserts and the justification of desert dessert desertification,” she summarized.

Sal is drawn to trouble like a moth to my face.

With full stomachs, and Elim’s money on the table, we headed back for the tram stop in the middle of town. In the time we’d been eating, however, some kind of commotion had developed. A single loud voice rang out from the square, attracting a small, restless crowd. Curiosity seized my legs and drove me toward the scene until Ray grabbed my arm and yanked me backward.

“What’s going on?” I asked, eyes glued to a figure gesticulating on a small platform.

“Ah, no need to concern ourselves with that,” said Elim.

“Elim doesn’t want us to go over there.” I pulled harder against Ray’s grip. “Better check it out.”

Don't worry about them, they just smoked a little too much.

“What’s this party for, anyway?” I asked.

“You don’t know?” Someone with ribbon-streaked hair that hung to their knees tilted their head almost to the point that they were looking at me upside-down. “It’s the Mycelium Festival. We celebrate all that the Great Mycelium has given us or whatever, every year. They don’t have that where you’re from?”

I shook my head. “We have a harvest festival around this time, but it’s nothing like this. Mostly just eating tons of food, drinking, and smoking.”

“That’s pretty much what this is,” an individual in a flowing striped shirt and incredibly short shorts pointed out.

“I can think of a couple things we were missing out on.” I glanced back at the dancers twirling down the street in an attempt to avoid blatantly checking out this person’s legs. They giggled and promptly fell over, drawing muted alarm from their friends.

While you were posting on Bluesky, Sal was reluctantly studying the blade.

“My arms are tired from yesterday,” I repeated.

“Oh, my bad.” She turned to face me so that I’d get the full impact of her shout. “That’s your fucking fault and I don’t fucking care! Practice!”

My anger flared. I let it out by bringing the sword down as hard as I could upon the bucket head of the nearest dummy. The blade snapped off the handle upon impact and fell to the ground with a thud.

I held up the handle. “This is broken.”

Ray also took out her frustration on the dummy, knocking its head clear off with one swing of her staff.

“Now that is broken,” I said.

“What else is there to do?”

Ray shot me a look. “You could actually train once in a while. Like you were supposed to be doing today with Eko.”

I groaned. I hated training. It was boring as shit and all the weapons were too heavy and hurt my hands.

“Or you could research in the library,” Ray added. “Or help out in the stables. Grow your mushrooms. Try to bake without resorting to theft. There are plenty of options.”

“Five is not ‘plenty’ when we’ve been here two seasons,” I griped.

Sexy times at the fair.

“I actually need that-” I started.

I forgot about it in the next moment as the dancer took me by hand and hip and led me in movement around the edge of the stage. Somehow, even in my inebriated state (or maybe because of it), I was able to follow every step, ducking and turning and sashaying with them. Their amber eyes rarely left mine, watching me with a haughty smile. I laughed as they spun me to their chest and felt my cheeks go hot when they stopped me an inch from their ruby-painted lips.

“May I have a taste?” they asked, eyes hinting downward. Their sultry voice melted away my ability to use words, so I just nodded.

They twirled me out, dipped me, and kissed me, catching my mouth open. A distant taste of cinnamon fueled the sensation of warmth that traveled from my throat all the way down my torso. As they pulled away, their teeth just scraped my lower lip.

Me and Eko crouched behind the compost heap. It flourished with mushrooms feeding on the life within the food scraps and discarded cloth, breaking it down into the earth that would once again grow what it ate in a never-ending cycle that made our existence possible.

It smelled like ass.

I rewrote this moment after experiencing this exact sensation when my favorite character died in a series that I didn't expect to love as much as I did. It was shocking to have real feelings of grief over a fictional character, but also fucking beautiful, man.

She pulled away, shaking her head. She glanced at me and Ray, then turned her eyes to the floor. My heart squeezed and pounded. I opened my mouth to ask, but nothing came out.

“’Sata.” Ashanti took her hand back in his.

Assata closed her eyes, tears falling.

It felt like something in me collapsed. An ache began at my skin and withdrew into me, condensing into a ball of agony at the very core of my being. I wrapped my arms around it and sobbed. Eko and Ray both grabbed for me as I keeled over.

But I couldn’t. I needed to go. And so we’d snuck out in the middle of the night, after a quick goodbye to my favorite goat, knowing that no one would be too upset. I couldn’t tell my sister why I needed to leave so soon, just that I couldn’t wait another day. Maybe our family had finally broken me. Maybe the very thought of escape was just too enticing. But it didn’t feel enticing, no. It felt inevitable. It just needed to happen, and it would. It’s hard to explain.

You know that feeling you get when you can tell you’re fucking up, you’re going down the absolute wrong path, you should have turned back long ago but you’ve put so much effort already into doing what you know you shouldn’t have that you just keep going on the dismal hope that somehow, in spite of every step taking you deeper into total shit, it will all work out?

Anyway, we were lost.

Eko’s voice came out shaking. “This is more important than any of us. She’ll kill everyone, Sal.”

“I know.” I rubbed my face into the fabric to dry my tears. “This isn’t fucking fair. Why do you still have to suffer after everything you’ve been through?”

They wrapped their arms around me. “I don’t know. Why won’t Zell leave you alone? Why is this happening to any of us?”

“Because everything fucking sucks,” I determined.

I heard light footsteps pass us as we engaged in more silent hugging time. This time, when I pulled away, I couldn’t look at them.

“Please promise me you won’t let them kill you,” I said to their chest. “Promise me you won’t kill yourself for this. Let us try something else. Let us find her another way, by actually asking for help.”

Searching for this made me realize how often I use the word "brain."

I looked up, staring directly back into those hard eyes. “Fuck. You.”

His shoulders rose and something dangerous flashed in his eyes. He took another step, and thunder rumbled as his boot hit the ground. I blinked at it, so tired that for a moment I thought I might have imaged the sound. Then a cool breeze hit, flowing down the gap in the earth and drying the sweat on my forehead.

Zell looked up just as the rain hit. I laughed, and the way he turned his eyes back to my form on the ground convinced me that the beating was coming double now, but I still couldn’t stop. The downpour felt good on my hot face and cracking lips, turning the dried dirt on my clothes back into mud. I didn’t even mind what it would do to my underwear.
