Did you recognize Count Orlok himself (Max Schreck) playing the blindman? A shortened version has been around for years, but it’s been restored and the now the plot finally makes sense. I agree it’s a good example of the filmmakers learning how to use expressionist motifs when it serves the story.

It got a lot of attention back in 1983 but 40 years ago is a long time; I wish it would be streamed again for more people to see. It’s all good, but the story really picks up steam around episode 7 with Riley becoming an important player in the Russian Revolution.

Nice to find another Cool & Lam fan! Perry Mason’s career was like Mickey Mouse; early days a tough guy, but forced to become corporate with success. With Cool & Lam, ESG could let his hair down & have fun with his version of screwball comedy/violence. Wish Dan Duryea could’ve played him in a film.
The “uncanny” (e.g almost every episode of the twilight zone) has always scared me way more than the boo scares. Even as a kid, I only remember being truly scared by 2 films, The Haunting & Dead of Night. But I enjoyed Jaws & thought “Bruce” was a worthy addition to the Universal Monster “pantheon.”
Maybe they’re talking about the YouTube/computer screen/single viewer effect… which says more about the viewer than what they’re watching. I watched MY MAN GODFREY a few months ago on the big screen with an audience and we laughed for the whole film; it’s more timely than ever!

The restaurant had a great run and lasted until 1953… I feel bad that the nightclub era has essentially gone in New York City. But we can always watch more movies from that era.
Not only was he handsome, but he was a champion! If you love this guy, you’ll love this series, but you may already know about it… it’s a British series that lasted for one season, but he’s great in it. The whole series is on YouTube. #TheChampions

Go for it! Just remember that Douglas Sirk got there first and he’s winking at you thru the whole film. He saw the original ‘35 version & decided that its problem was that they played the story too straight—it was a preposterous story that needed to BE preposterous. #TCMParty #MagnificentObsession
Except for Pilgrimage. I saw that for the first time at the Directors Guild theater in LA and by halfway through the film most the audience were either tearing up or simply crying… that was absolutely a Mom and Son Movie.
We are getting a lot of generational spread with this question. My dad served in World War II but he didn’t care much for war movies. He loved WC Fields, so my “dad movie”would be the underappreciated IT’S A GIFT.

A great discussion about this topic in S. Gould’s Wonderful Life. He talks about what would happen if you could play back history millions of years ago. Randomness plays a huge factor & if you replayed history back 10 times you may never get humans 10 out 10 times! Lots of lifeforms, but no humans.
