“Should we be in here?” he whispers, and I chuckle.
“You will steal?”
Greg pokes me in retaliation, and the contact zings
through me. “No,” he whispers again. “But I don’t want to get you in trouble.” Feeling bold, I reach out and gently turn his face toward me by his chin.
“I like trouble.” I think it’s the first perfectly correct sentence I’ve said to him, and it seems to have the effect I meant it to when he shivers a little.

“Well, if you wanna bow out of anything, they wouldn’t care. I have to go to church, but you don’t.” I bounce my eyebrows. “Not that I wouldn’t love to scandalize them by bringing a boyfriend.”
“That might be worth it. Can we make out in the parking lot?”
“For sure.” We both cackle at the thought, and when I grin at him, it’s hard to look back at the road: Happy Antonio doesn’t show up enough. He picks up my phone and turns on the Christmas playlist I made. “Fitz and the Tantrums, Eels, Teen Mortgage…where the Sinatra? Where’s Bing?”
I make a gagging sound. “Where it belongs. Elsewhere.”

431 this time! I've been looking forward to this scene for a long time.

Antonio’s feeding me red licorice as we bypass Pendleton, the last city before we turn south. There’s a smattering of snow in the fields and in the ditches, but the road’s clear and the sun’s out. Four hours later, I would have thought the conversation would have thinned out, but it’s still going strong.
“Do you think Marley and Scrooge were…”
“Were what? Partners in more than business?”
Antonio shrugs. “It could be. Might explain why the guy’s such a jerk. Lost his partner and can’t even mourn him like he should be able to.”
“Huh.” I scrub at my chin, thinking. “He does live in Marley’s old house.”
“And he doesn’t take his name off the sign.”
“That’s just because he’s cheap.”
“Is it?” Antonio’s gaze is serious. “He confuses the carolers when he calls it Scrooge and Marley’s business premises.”
“Wasn’t that just him being a cheap-ass punk? Not wanting to fix the sign?”
“Who’s to say?”
“Wow.” I stare at the white pickup truck in front of us. “Is this a queer play after all?”
“The incessant torture of remorse…” Antonio murmurs, and a shiver goes up my spine.

With a sigh, Antonio rolls over and nestles himself against my body like we’ve been doing it for years, his face tucked into my neck, an arm slung over my chest and a leg pinning my hip.
“Y’allright?” he mumbles, and I nod, putting my arms around him and squeezing.
“Go back to sleep.”
“Mkay.”
Sleepy Antonio might be my favorite iteration. I didn’t get to appreciate sleeping in the same bed together last night, because I was too exhausted. I should be now, too. But the weight of him is less like a lullaby and more like a movie I want to stay up late watching, knowing it’ll be over too soon.
It doesn’t have to be.
Whoever invents a way to turn off your brain can have all my money. I stare up at the ceiling, his breath in even puffs against my neck, and he twitches like he’s dreaming again already.

Writing report: Heeey, we finally made it to Christmas morning! (Well, roommate Christmas, anyway.) And as usual, Sammy's feeling spicier than the cinnamon rolls... #yulebesorry

“I know. Hey, merry Christmas, everybody!” They whoop in response, and Drew surges forward toward the presents around the tree in the front window. Someone has put a cheerful fireplace video on the TV, but the music is coming from someone’s phone.
“What song is this?” Sammy asks, curling up on the floor next to the couch.
Colby picks up his phone and looks at the screen. “Christmastime (Oh Yeah) by the Barenaked Ladies. I think this is one of Chance’s.”
“It is,” Evan says, sipping something from a mug, “and mine’s coming up next. Vince Guaraldi Trio for the win.”
“They’re all quite picky about music, as you might imagine, so we came up with a group playlist.” I explain as I nudge him with my toe. “You can sit on the couch.”
“There’s not room for everyone,” he says dismissively. “What did you pick?”
“Pardon?”
He’s staring up at me with those dark, sultry eyes, and the angle is giving me ideas. Really, body? You just got off. “Which songs did you add?”
“Oh, I, uh…”
Drew puts a green package with snowmen all over it into my hands, and I thank him. Sammy’s still watching me expectantly. Dang.
“You didn’t add one, did you?” He’s smirking now, and I fiddle with the thin ribbon on the package instinctively.
“Everyone has different tastes…”
“I tell you what: I’ll sit on the sofa if you add a song to the playlist.”
“Just one?”
He nods slowly, still solely focused on me despite the hubbub around the room. “But it has to be one you really want. One you listened to as a kid. One that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, even if it’s something you don’t think we’ll like.”
