"the game is written like social media" is a phrase that's really stuck with me since reading this to describe this style of writing which I have an *extreme* distaste for. it's so spot-on

The script has the same rhythm and tone as reading a bsky thread of screenshots of tumblr and twitter threads. It all feels tailor-made for the type of folks who will post screencaps of girls kissing captioned "GAY GAY GAY" or "Fuck cops!" or "Yeah, mutual aid!" or something equally tame. It's a game where you can Pet the Dog. From a certain point of view, that's quite clever design. Making the game a word-of-mouth generator has the potential to pay dividends in sales, and Demonschool appears to have done quite well for itself. But shitposts are inherently shallow and disposable, so Demonschool feels that way as well.

nationalism doesn't work for me so I don't really care for world competitions but there's no ABS in the World Baseball Classic and we get to watch a bunch of Latinos embarrass America's JV team so thoroughly that the announcers must recount the early game termination rules every few minutes

From me: "2XKO is not inherently for me so I don't have much to say about the gameplay specifically, other than that it looks really basic and seems incapable of creating a good spectator experience. just too thin and copycat to create hype moments. the name is awful, esp for its correct pronunciation ("two ecks kay oh" instead of "Double Knockout"). most League characters don't map well to a fighter bc they're made for almost the opposite of a 2D fighter, League of Legends. straightforward brawlers like Darius and Ekko or characters with obvious fighting game movesets/counterparts like Blitzcrank fare quite well, while ranged DPS (like all of the video game's most popular characters) look dumb as hell. really strange redesign choices. too few characters on launch, especially for a tag fighter. Riot is to blame for the current state of fighting games since they codified that esports = advertisement, forever, so games should be made to feed the esport, so I'm sure they'll be able to spend their way into relevance for a while. really looks like a studio's first fighting game, which is a shame given that Riot's artist roster is among the best in the world

icing on the cake, which I haven't mentioned in a while: Riot's anticheat, Vanguard, has caused me so many issues that I'll never download one of their games again, even if I don't end up switching to Linux. at least nothing of value will be lost!"
