What's new for #europeanparties? The appointment of Philippe Musquar as Director of the #APPF, announced last week, is now facing approval hurdles, amid reluctance by France, Italy, Germany and Spain over political orientation concerns, according to Euractiv.

On Monday, #Hungary adopted a constitutional amendment imposing a mandatory retirement age of 70 on constitutional court judges. I have long thought that similar measures -- retirement age, maximum eligibility age, and term limits -- ought to be imposed on legislatures, esp. the @europarl.europa.eu

As reported by @politico.eu's @marieccles.bsky.social, @aldeparty.bsky.social's congress was a chance for big corporate donors to cozy up to MEPs in private meetings, raising again the ethical question of corporate party donations. 👉 the question is: who do we want to see fund our common parties?

You'd think the opening of the first verification procedure against an EU party --framed as "ban the AfD" or "silencing opposition to immigration"-- would trigger strong reactions. Barely a press release by ESN Group, unavailable on their website. So quiet.

Clarification: the raids undertaken by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office are in relation to the former Identity and Democracy (ID) *group*, not the European party. You might be confused because ID Party also got sanctioned, for misleading citizens on its website. #europeanparties

Exactly my argument to support compulsory voting. Make it easy, make it fun, make it postal/proxy/online, and make all the awareness-raising campaigns you want, but make it compulsory. It is and remains a citizen's duty.

Yesterday, the @europarl.europa.eu adopted its 2026 report on the implementation of the EU law on #europeanparties and foundations! Unsurprisingly, the same people who complain about lack of democracy also chose not to support a text which makes (small) steps for democracy.

The process for verification/removal is also purposefully made long and complex. First, nothing substantial is required of #europeanparties or foundations or their members at the registration stage: all they need to do is fill in a standard form saying they observe EU values. 15/38

For the record, the Charter has the same legal status as EU treaties and enshrines both the "right to freedom of peaceful assembly and to freedom of association at all levels" and the role of #europeanparties. 14/38

Firstly, not only does the Regulation refer to the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, but it explicitly says that removal decisions "should fully respect the Charter" and "should be taken only in the event of a manifest and serious breach of those values". 13/38

Additionally, the @europarl.europa.eu currently recommends that #europeanparties and foundations use PDF as an open, machine-readable format for their reporting, despite PDF specifically not being a machine-readable format... #OpenData

❌ Unfortunately, the layout is entirely wrong for data exploitation (which is the very purpose of machine-readable documents) and the data is corrupted (left). ✅ @eudemocracy.eu already reached out to @europarl.europa.eu to provide advice and support (right) 💪

💪 First consequence of the new legal requirement to publish financial data on #europeanparties in open, machine-readable format: the @europarl.europa.eu is publishing CSV files with public funding amounts. 🇪🇺 Can definitely be improved upon, but this is a step in the right direction. 👍

Indeed, nothing really new -- this is already in the Lisbon treaty signed almost nine years ago. But, of course, member states were quick to agree to alter this number.
