So today's #wipsnips is *frontier*, which funnily enough doesn't appear in the American Frontier Historical Romance I'm writing... BUT this is one of my favorite passages & it fits the theme. In which Owen & his friend Ezra are drunk as otters & a plan is hatched with 1840 Transcendentalist vibes:

“You know what you should do?” Ezra’s irksomely cheerful voice cut through his thoughts.
“Go next door and have another drink?”
“No… well. Maybe. But you should also go west.”
“West?”
“Like one of those new places. Chicago, Detroit or… Clee- cleeville.” Ezra’s face scrunched, in deep, drunken thought. “That’s not right. Cleeve…ton? Cleeve…”
“Clevelend?”
“Yes!” Ezra snapped his fingers. “That’s it. Cleveland.” He propped himself on his elbow, grinning into Owen’s face. “You see? You are clever. Your father has no idea.”
“What would I do in Cleveland?”
Ezra’s expression went suddenly serious… or maybe not. It was hard to tell with him. “You’d find your Self.”
“Oh, of course,” Owen rolled his eyes. No. Not serious at all. “Trust thyself. Every heart vibrates to that iron string.” He recited. Honestly, Ezra wouldn’t shut up about this rot since he’d read that book of essays—and made Owen read it too. “I’m a lawyer, not a philosopher or a blasted hermit.”
But his friend was undeterred. “You could still be a lawyer… There's no law against lawyers finding themselves. And I’m sure they’ve a need for lawyers in Cleev— Cleev—”
“Cleveland?”

This room took up a corner of the house, with one window looking toward the back—the stableyard and the woods beyond. And one facing east, where two men worked with scythes cutting a field of hay. A stove had been inserted into the old grate, not that he’d need it in the September heat. And the bed. Full size, with tall carved posts and a quilt of red and white squares.
The bed.
That cold, nauseous feeling from earlier hit him again. Not in a hundred years could he imagine the woman he’d just met, in that bed with him.
It couldn’t be just his imagination. She’d been repulsed by him.

I visited the oldest house in Milwaukee today, then walked a gorgeous stretch of the Milwaukee River and explored an icy stretch of lakeshore... The best part? As this was research for my next book (set in MKE in 1842), lunch and mileage were tax deductible! See?? Writing fiction pays after all.
