Another recent arrival from the Bad Place. Brighton-based. Middle-aged. Likes: complaining, nerd stuff, Dr. Who & other British SF, Modernist art, alternative music, but mostly the complaining.
This week I have been mostly listening to Ash Ra Tempel. Their USP was their ability to find the sweet spot between rock jamming (which can feel too limited, like a prisoner pacing up and down in his cell) and free impro (which can be too nebulous and structureless). [1/3]
'Backrooms' is, in my Four-Eyed opinion, pretty good. I guess the challenge is to invent a front story to turn the concept into a film, without making the Backrooms merely a backdrop. Which they... mostly manage to do, tho' they stray a little close to becoming a maze for monsters. (1/2)
If I was ever being a naughty child, my Mum would tell me to behave or Martin Goodwin from the Guardian would come and take my photo. Boy, it used to put the wind up me!
Right at the lights, just past the garage. I'm normally in after six.
My Gothic Horror read-through reaches Sheridan le Fanu’s ‘In A Glass Darkly’. And how come I’d never read this before? The only (minor) criticism would be that the last two stories, “The Room In The Dragon Volant’ and ‘Carmilla’, are really shoe-horned into the Detective Hesselius framework. (1/4)
Bit of a sideways move, but I suppose the politics thing wasn't really working out for them.
“It was a long time ago, in a farmhouse far away.” “It was the worst of times, then it was the worst of times for the next generation.” "It is a far better hissy fit than I have ever thrown; it is a far better rest that I go to than that I have ever known. Heathcliffe, you’ll be along later, yeah?”
I’m not surprised they can be this cruel. I’m not surprised they can be this hypocritical. What surprises me is they still haven’t worked out that if they get in a Nigel Farage lookalike contest with Nigel Farage then Nigel Farage is going to win. I‘m surprised they’re this stupid.
The truly awful thing about these atrocities is the double whammy. First, the people killed and injured. Then, regardless of whoever carried them out, the Right spin them to perpetuate more hate.
Under apartheid...your *actual* apartheid, South Africa's population was over 80% black. It was apartheid precisely because the majority didn't get the same rights. These bozos aren't just arguing the occupation isn't apartheid, they're claiming apartheid wasn't apartheid.
Two months until Reform start blaming colder weather on small boats.
If we keep commenting every time an Onion headline becomes real, there won't be time to eat or sleep.
'An Alternative Eleven', my Dr. Who fanfic, reaches its finale... "Having been chased across the whole of Britain, The Doctor and his shadowy adversary finally come face to face…" analternativeeleven.blogspot.com/2025/07/conf...
Yeah, if we started up the training now maybe we could be self-sufficient in rapists by 2030.
Oh, right. Anyway, how long is it that we’ve always been at war with Eastasia?
It was always a high-risk strategy, and it hasn’t worked for them. In Orwell, the Party’s final command was to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. But then what does the Party do when people carry on trusting their eyes and ears?
