5 years ago today I caught this image of Jupiter in the daytime along with moons Io, Europa and Ganymede :)
The incredible Whirlpool Galaxy! There are over 100 billion stars in this galaxy and it took 31 million years for this light to reach my yard Look at the bottom left corner of the first pic. I caught a galaxy called IC4263. It is SO distant, that it took 140 million years for its light to reach us
Majestic Jupiter! Unlike stars, planets don't produce light... when we look at Jupiter, we are seeing sunlight that takes 43 minutes to reach Jupiter that then reflects off the surface and takes another 35 minutes to get back to us 🙂 Photo taken from my back yard in Victoria, BC.

Earth has a new moon for a while... 2025 PN7 is a newly discovered, 19-meter asteroid that has fallen into an orbit around Earth. It poses no threat and will remain a companion for several decades before being pulled back into space. It can't be seen with the naked eye, and I did not take this photo
The Jellyfish Nebula! Formed 30,000 years ago when a massive star exploded as a supernova, the material that the star was made from — plus new elements forged in the extreme temperatures of the explosion — blasted outwards! It took 5000 years for this light to hit my back yard in Victoria, BC :)
To us deadheads, the Skull and Roses has been a part of Grateful Dead iconography since 1966. One thing I love about the Rosette Nebula is that if you turn it on its' side, it becomes the Skull Nebula... :)
The Cosmic Rose! This beautiful rose is actually a stellar nursery. The star cluster in the middle are massive baby stars and their radiation lights up belts of red hydrogen and blue oxygen. Magnificent!! It took 5200 years for this light to reach my yard in Victoria, BC.
Wow! The last @grateful-dead.bsky.social Chinese New Years at the Oakland Coliseum was 32 years ago today! I still have my button and was stoked to find this photo showing me in the 5th row or so! That Supplication jam and Cosmic Charlie tease were EPIC!

The Tadpoles Nebula. This cosmic cloud that looks like tadpoles swimming through the cosmos... Zoom in!! It is actually an area of massive star birth, the tadpoles shaped by intense stellar winds. It took 12,000 years for this light to hit my yard in Victoria, BC.

The Orion and Running Man nebulae - the closest star nursery's to Earth. I caught the space dust swirling through this chaotic area. Some will still mix with the gasses to form new stars, the leftovers will one day form planets! It took 1350 yrs for this light to reach my yard in Victoria, BC.
We are part of a local group of three spiral galaxies consisting of our Milky Way, Andromeda, and the smaller Triangulum (seen here). In this image, you can see bright sports in the spiral arms where new baby stars are being born! It took 2.73 million years for this light to reach my yard in BC :)
The unbelievably beautiful Horsehead and Flame nebuae. Please click and Zoom in... take a look around at how awesome this star nursery is! The Horsehead is a huge tower of space dust among a deep red streak of hydrogen, the Flame is a grand cluster of star formation. Incredible! :)
Now THIS is cool! While imaging the Horsehead Nebula I captured this AMAZING gravitationally bound system of stars. The largest one (middle) is Sigma Orionis. It looks to be a double star because the one just below is double the distance of Pluto with our sun, they orbit one another every 170 yrs!

As we paid respects and bid farewell to Bob Weir yesterday, I'm thinking to the traditional "lowering down" funeral song that ended many Grateful Dead shows, particularly in the late 1960s. As sad as it is so see him go, there is much joy & celebration in the music! We Bid You Goodnight, Bobby!
