My brother, Michael Eric, passed away at 3yo. Shortly thereafter, my mother sealed this quote in tape and carried it in her wallet. It comforted me. My novel #HowToBuildAMiracle begins w/ this quote. MC is nicknamed Shakespeare as he loves words. But also nod for my bro ❣️ #mg #grief #mglit #mgreads

The song, “Brighter Days” by Blessing Offor has a very special place in this book. It becomes a compass for one of my favorite characters. Because, as a kid myself, music got me through. No emotional safety net at home. So I turned to the radio. 🎶

Sadly, it’s the end of an era in children’s Lit. So very sad to hear of the passing of Jane Yolen, a literary luminary who published over 400 children’s books. But it is her generosity and kindness to me that I will most remember. Go find a copy of OWL MOON and read it to a little. One of my faves.

While writing a novel, I tend to collect weird little “connection things” for my desk. For #HowToBuildAMiracle I found this little boat and later small glass stars to fill it. The stars are especially sentimental to me as they remind me of my brother, Michael Eric, who passed when he was almost 4 💔
