So far, regarding the Draft2Digital fees, the response I see from the industry insiders is
"It's only $12 a year, what's the problem?"

The problem is that it's only being charged to the LOWEST EARNING authors.

If it were a charge every author had to pay, regardless of sales, it wouldn't look so much like a money grab.

D2D is doing this for good reasons, and it's a good business decision. But it looks very bad to the author who took a chance, wrote the book, and didn't get any sales. I have literally seen authors say they're walking away from publishing because "clearly I'm not good enough."

So to my fellow industry insiders: Remember who we're doing all this for in the first place. Show just a bit of compassion here, rather than trying to make these authors feel foolish for having qualms over what you think is small cash.

Update from Amy: they emailed her back and said if you don't have any books published, you won't get charged. So all you have to do is delist the books. After she received that email, she said her account standing page updated to now say this.

Annual Maintenance Fee
If you earn more than $100 dollars a year from book sales, meaning your net proceeds after D2D’s commission, your account fee will be waived automatically. Otherwise you will be asked to pay $12 annually to cover ongoing account costs.

If applicable, your next maintenance fee will be due on April 16, 2027.
Currently, your account has no published books. Accounts with no published books are not subject to maintenance fees. On the maintenance fee due date, your Account Status will change to "Non-Publishing Account" instead of being charged a maintenance fee. Should you wish to publish any books, a maintenance fee will be due at that time (and your maintenance fee due date will reset to one year out from when your fee was paid).

What if I don’t want to be charged the maintenance fee?

If you do not want to pay your annual account maintenance fee, you may unpublish your books to delist them from distribution. Accounts with no titles in distribution (no active request to list at stores) are not subject to the maintenance fee.

Per @amybearce.bsky.social, you can check your "Account Status" on your D2D Dashboard (under account tab). She had unpublished all her books several years ago but hadn't closed her account. She still got this page (this is my screenshot, but she got the same message).

Account Status: Your account is in good standing.

Your $12 USD annual maintenance fee will be due July 7, 2026.

If payment hasn’t been made within 30 days of the fee due date, all published books will be unpublished, and the account status will change from “in good standing” to “suspended.” You will retain access to your account and can continue to download tax files and see historical data as well as take advantage of free tools like conversion and epubcheck, but no publishing actions can be made.

Can I take a break and pay my negative account balance to re-enable publishing on my account?

Sure. You can return at any time. Come back to this Account Status page to pay any outstanding fees and return your Account Status to “good standing”.

Historical Fee Information: Any previous fee payments made are available to see in the chart below, in your account ledger, and will be included in your raw sales data downloads.

I fired this off in a fit of explosive rage

You have to know how mad you've just made everybody. I made $70 on D2D last year which is NOT a small amount considering that Amazon sales are not factored into that number. I made more than five times that amount on Amazon. You know that consumers are predominantly buying on Amazon. Wide authors are trying our hardest to encourage sales on non-Amazon retailers, on Smashwords, and through libraries, because we specifically believe in not participating in Amazon's KU monopoly, and we are trying to support D2D/Smashwords as a viable alternative. But at the end of the day we can't control it if consumers are choosing to buy on Amazon instead of through a D2D retailer. All you guys are doing by charging this fee is causing midlist indie authors to quit Draft2Digital entirely. Now that you've done this, even if you walk it back, you've burned authors' trust and a HUGE percentage of them are going to abandon you altogether and list directly now. So good job, I guess?

Are you going to give us a waiver if we're IBPA or ALLi members, since we can verify we're not AI slop farms? Or are you just really adamant about driving yourselves out of business?

“It’s not terrible, but…” I gestured toward the top third of the mural, where the space shuttle was soaring through the stars. “See how that looks kind of skewed when you look down here?” I pointed to the other mostly finished section,
the underground crystal cavern. “When you’ve got a unified piece like this, you want to have one single vanishing point so that all the perspective is oriented the same way. Somewhere around here.” I tapped my finger on the blank wall in the spot where the ground of the as-yet-unpainted
forest would disappear into the horizon. It was so obvious now. But I hadn’t known about linear perspective or vanishing points when I was in high school. I’d just drawn what “looked good” for each individual section, without considering how they would go together.
