"Bellwing siren's one," he said. "They hang around ruins, usually. Sleep in 'em durin' the heat of the day. They fly, and they're damn fast. They look kinda like a snake with wings."

Haru nodded. "They have rattles too, but it sounds more like a bell."

"Got big fangs but not venomous, accordin' to Pa," Logan went on. "Don't need to be. It'll hold ya still with its tail an' pull ya apart with those fangs."

Haru shot him a horrified look, but Andy was grinning ear to ear. "That's so cool!"

"If I didn't know better, I'd say he takes after you," Haru muttered to Logan. Logan grinned.

"One more, please, Owen," Annie said as he came out of the kitchen. He walked behind the bar and stood in front of her.

"I think that's enough," he said, not unkindly. "And I'll say it one more time." She rolled her eyes and sighed. "Whatever is going on, I really wish you'd tell me. Or someone else who cares about you and can help." Her eyes dropped to the bar. He sighed. "Maybe I can't help, but I can't watch you drink the day away, either. Again."

"Not the whole day," she insisted. "I'll leave after this one. I won't be here for dinner for sure."

Doing something *slightly* different for #WIPWednesday …instead of a snippet of an upcoming chapter of Given to Fly, here’s a bit of a side project I’ve started

Howlett scanned the telegram. "Cats? They're askin' us to come all that way fer cats?"

Logan shrugged. "Sounds like easy money, Pa. An' maybe we'll pick up some more work out there."

"'Spose. Well, we ain't got anythin' else goin' on for a while. Go getcher brother, tell 'im we got work to do."

Their destination was a little unnamed village along an unnamed highway, not far from Doss. Well, not far from what was left of Doss. Maybe if this job went as easy as they thought it would, he could talk Howlett into going out there, indulge his curiosity. And if they found some critters coming out of the Periphs with a bounty on their heads, or furs and claws they could sell, all the better. Logan was always eager for a new way to challenge himself, find bigger and badder monsters to take out, to prove his skills both to himself and to Howlett.

When Andy finished describing the attack and the monster that had done it, Logan's face was also grim.

"Wrecked the wagons with the claws, then used teeth for more precision," he muttered to himself. "Fits with what we saw. Wondered about that."

Haru nodded. "Yeah, it almost seemed like different people, or monsters, had done it. Different types of damage."

"That why y'all thought it was bandits?" Andy asked, looking between Haru and Logan.

"Yeah," Logan said, though that wasn't completely the truth. They'd suspected monsters from the beginning, but without being able to identify the culprit, it seemed kinder to lean into the possibility of humans doing it. Somehow "bad people that will get caught eventually" felt less terrifying than "monster we can't identify and might not be able to stop."

"So ya know what it is?"

Logan shook his head slowly. "No, kid. I'm sorry. I don't remember Pa ever mentioning such a beast, an' I know I ain't never seen anythin' like that."

Haru sighed heavily. "Yeah, same here. But I thought maybe you'd remember Howlett saying something I wasn't around for, or something you'd seen one of the times just the two of you went on jobs."

Logan shook his head again. "Unfortunately not." He leaned toward Andy and spoke quietly. "But that don't mean we can't find out what it was, an' stop it. I'll do my damnedest to make sure it don't hurt nobody else. Okay?"

Andy nodded, his eyes looking a bit watery but he didn't let the tears fall. "Good," was all he said.

The trial was first thing in the morning, and Logan was glad of it. He didn't think he could stand waiting hours for it. Haru was already annoyed with his pacing in the cell for the last week.

Justice led them, uncuffed, to the steps of city hall. Mayor Trudy waited for them, and she greeted them with a nod and a small smile.

"Are you ready?" she asked them in a quiet voice.

"Yes, ma'am," Haru said. "We're both ready to hear the town's judgment."

Logan wasn't so sure, but the day was here whether he was ready or not. He was ready for it to be over with, at least.

"We'll go ahead and get started," Trudy said once the town was assembled.

Logan looked out over the town he loved, the people he loved, and his heart hurt for the damage he'd done to them. He struggled to keep his face impassive. He really, really missed his mask.

"Doc put ya on light duty, huh?" Logan asked with a grin. He perched on Annie's fence, watching her as she packed up boxes of nails. Despite everything that had happened just a few days ago and with the uncertainty of the trial and punishment still waiting ahead, Logan felt more relaxed, more at peace, than. he had in a long time. Sitting on the builder's fence, chatting, feeling the sun and the wind with a clear blue sky above…a man could almost believe things were finally working out alright.

She groaned. "Did he tell everyone?"

"Heard it from Trudy. She said ya need some help movin' stuff around."

"Yeah," Annie sighed. "Unfortunately, I have to admit that I do." She gestured at the crutch leaning against the workbench. "Can't carry a lot when I have this thing."

"Well, that's what I'm here for. I'd say 'hired muscle', but ya get me for free." He grinned and she rolled her eyes with a laugh.

For #WIPWednesday, a bit of a sort of “therapy session” with Zeke and Logan after the events at the starship ruin. Unsure if this will actually end up in the fic…currently have this (mostly about Howlett), Annie talking about Duvos and never being enough, and a bit of Haru relating to Andy

Z: He really struggled after Carmen left. I wish you coulda known him as a younger man.

L: Me too. It's hard to think back an' find so many memories where he shoulda been but wasn't. Goin' off for days at a time, doin' who knows what with Peach knows who. Drinkin' all night with the photo album, havin' to be brought home from the Blue Moon 'cause he couldn't walk himself. Found him passed out on the stairs once, had to try an' drag 'im to bed. [bitter laugh] Was too small to carry him then, though. I'd stay out as long as I could at night or stay over at Vivi's just to avoid his moods.

Z: But Haru changed that?

L: By then I was fairly independent, an' I spent a lot of time hangin' around Justice an' Owen, so I wasn't around a lot myself. I think he kinda forgot kids needed attention from their folks, y'know? But Haru was younger, and traumatized to boot. He needed care. Pa recognized that, an' I think he was reminded he was already a father an' it was time to act like it.

"Surely hunting wolves in a swamp is low on the list of the Inquisition's priorities," Solas said. His lips twisted in a grimace.

Aerin sighed. "Maybe so, but we should stabilize Thedas in any way we can. It's worth a few days out of our way to save lives." He only tilted his head at her silently in response, then continued dousing the fire.

"Well, I for one am ready to find some straightforward enemies after that nonsense with the envy demon," Blackwall said as he set his whetstone aside. "Find evil, hit it with a sword, repeat as needed."

"I wouldn't mind a break from demonic possession myself," Aerin said. She scribbled a quick response to Leliana's missive and sent the bird back to Skyhold before tucking the letter into her pack. She scanned the campsite, seeing Blackwall and Solas busy packing the last of their gear. "I assume Cole is ready to go as well, since he's disappeared again."

"What if the wolves are not wolves?" he said from behind her, making her jump.

Aerin blinked at him. "Well, we'll see what we're facing when we get there, I suppose." Cole nodded, accepting her non-answer, and they loaded and tacked up the horses in silence.

"Builder?" His voice carried down from the top floor. "Unless it is another R47 core, I am too busy to see it."

She started up the stairs to the main floor. "Not even a fully intact trotter bot?"

Silence for a moment, then footsteps running down the stairs. "Wait.
Fully intact, you say?" He appeared in the doorway and immediately held out his hands.

Annie passed him the AI. "It might be fried. Well, okay, it's definitely fried. But I thought you'd like to crack it open and see what's inside."

Qi inspected it carefully. "Yes, I can see some scorching but it's possible the internal electronics could be repaired. Where did you get this?"

"The Breach, but they're all over."

"No, I mean, they are usually hostile, are they not? Was this one already deactivated when you found it?" He gave her a sideways look. "I have seen what AIs usually look like when you are done with them."

#WIPWednesday Maker’s breath it’s Dragon Age for once

"This is what's left of Lothering," Aerin said grimly. From horseback, the four surveyed the area. Remnants of a few buildings remained in the form of scorched, rotting boards. A pile of crumbled masonry that might once have been a foot bridge lay on the banks of a stagnant creek. Only the crumbling stone of the chantry was recognizable as the building it once was. The ground itself was devoid of all life; with the grass long since dead, only the dirt was exposed, and it was a tarry, wet-looking black with patches of rusty brown. Even the damage was that was done to this part of the Imperial Highway was left unrepaired, as though no one could imagine any travelers would ever set foot here again.

"You can still smell the blight in this place," Solas murmured. Blackwall nodded in agreement beside him.

"Why were you asking about builder school, anyway? I thought you wanted to be a superhero when you grow up."

"Haru says you gotta have a backup plan," he said. "So if the whole superhero thing don't work out, maybe I'll be a builder. Or a salvager."

Annie nodded. "Haru is very smart." She looked at Andy. "And so are you. It's a lot of school, but I know you could do it if you tried. You'd be a great builder, I bet." He gave her a wide crooked-toothed smile, and she couldn't help but smile back.

"Don't like school, but…" he shrugged. "Learnin' builder stuff from you is fun. And Qi's not so bad." He gave her a sideways look. "Don't you go tellin' him that, though."

#WIPWednesday forgot last week! Here's a bit coming up in a few chapters...

"Logan! Haru!"

They both turned as the builder's voice came from behind the bandit throne. Annie herself appeared a moment later, batting the curtain away. She was flushed and breathing hard.

"Whoa," Logan said, suddenly on edge. "What's wrong? What happened? Is it Andy?"

She shook her head, still catching her breath. "She's back. Elsie's home."

Relief crashed over Logan. "She's alright? Did you talk to her?" He heard Haru pouring her a glass of water.

Annie nodded and accepted the water from Haru. "Oh, bless you, Haru. Yeah, I talked to her a bit." She stopped and drank deeply. "She came back on that fucking giant duck. She tamed it and named it Daisy."

"What?" Logan and Haru said together.

"I swear, I saw it myself. You've never heard such a loud quack." She drained the rest of her water and Haru took the glass. "Thank you and no, before you ask. Don't waste more of your water on me."

"Elsie actually learned how to communicate with a Martle duck?" Haru asked, his voice skeptical.

"I know it sounds insane but she quacked at it and it settled down," Annie said. "She quacked at it again and it flew away." She shook her head. "I honestly didn't think she could do it. I was sure she was just hiding somewhere and pouting or something, living off lungfish and sandberries."

Logan had to admit that did sound like something Elsie would do.

"Weird," he said after a thoughtful minute. "Everythin's familiar but not. All the things you an' Mi-an have built, all the things people mention that we didn't even know about. All the things we shoulda been here for." He rapped his knuckles on the railing. "Case in point. We shoulda been here to help with the Geeglers. I'm not the diplomat Pa was, but maybe I coulda kept the peace."

"No one blames you for that, you know," she said.

"Maybe they should." He shook his head. "Sorry. You don't wanna listen to my bellyachin'."

"I will happily listen to your bellyaching," she said. "And I will happily tell you to knock it the fuck off when necessary."

A mahjong table sat in the middle of the floor, and a pair of booted legs protruded from beneath it.

"Annie?"

"Huh? Oh—ouch!" He heard a thunk from under the table and winced. "Uh. That was my head."

"I'm sorry…are you alright?" He knelt on the floor and peered under the table.

Annie was laying on her back under the table with dangling wires around her face. She waved awkwardly. "Hi."

"Hello." He frowned. "Did you hurt yourself? I didn't…mean to startle you."

"I'm fine," she said with a grin.

Fang hovered somewhere between wakefulness and a dream. This time, the rain was not so cold.

Sensations blurred together in twilight. His hand was warm, and that seemed important. A familiar voice, speaking softly, and he could almost understand her words. Soothing fingers stroking his hair. Birdsong in the distance. And then a long pause of quiet.

Fang awoke with a start, and memory rushed back. The illness. Annie. He opened his eyes. His hand was warm because she still held it, sitting beside him on his bed. She watched him carefully, her brows knit with worry.

"You're awake," she said.

"No, I told her to do what she wanted with her life," Annie shot back. "And she's not a child. I know it's hard to accept that, but you need to."

"She is my child so long as she is under my roof. An' now she's gone an' I know you're to blame."

Annie gaped at him. "What do you mean she's gone—shit."

"Aha!" Cooper shouted. "You do know somethin'! Where. Is. My! Girl!?"
