Here's the August artwork from my calendar - another lovely bird print by Inuit artist Kenojuak Ashevak.

Stonecut print of three stylized Arctic birds - the two on each end are in shades of black and green. The center bird is black with a crest of three two-toned orange feathers. It is a graphic and almost rhythmic depiction of the birds.

The weather was absolutely glorious on the last 2 days of our cruise through Glacier Bay. Look at Harvard Glacier in College Fjord. While I didn’t see calving, I heard it - deep booms and crackling, quite a thrill. Amused by the names of other nearby glaciers: Yale, Bryn Mawr, Smith, Vassar

On the McKinley express train headed to Denali for a night. We’re about 46 miles from the majestic peak. We are told that only about a third of those who enter the park get a clear view. We are privileged with stellar weather!

The carpets in the elevators here on the Holland Westerdam get changed daily to refect what day it is. Right now I’m pretty good at keeping track of that myself. But if I consume those 15 drinks a day, this might could be very helpful.

We’ve been cruising Alaska’s Inside Passage since yesterday and this is the itinerary for next 3 days. Then two days of scenic cruising at Glacier Bay and a day and a half at Denali.

The Holland Westerdam in port. The ship has 11 decks accommodating about 1950 passengers and 800 crew. That’s considered midsize, some lines go up to 4000 passengers.

These are the first 3 ports of call after today: Ketchikan, Juneau, Instagram. Then, on two days of scenic cruising by Glacier Nat’l Park followed by a day and a half in Denali.

There are two pools on the ship - one with a retractable roof above - and a few hot tubs. It’s 69° out today - mostly only kids using it.

I loved this imposing sculpture in the Vancouver airport that was created by Bill Reid, called “Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe”. It’s about a 5-ton bronze sculpture w/ a jade green patina measuring approx. 19 ft long x 13 ft tall. More about this work in alt text.

Spirit of Haida Gwaii is the largest, most complex, and best known of Bill Reid’s sculptures. The work depicts a canoe filled with thirteen entangled ethereal beings, the majority of whom are non-human and of mythical Haida origin: the Raven (Xhuuya), the Wolf, the Eagle, the Frog, the Bear Family, the Beaver, the Dogfish Mother, and the Mouse Woman (Quaganjaat). Three humans are aboard: the Bear Mother, the Chief (who sits at the centre holding his staff), and the “Ancient Reluctant Conscript,” as Reid has described him, who paddles humbly alongside all the others.

The sculpture has been seen as both a portrait of Reid himself and as a depiction of the condition of life on Earth as seen through his eyes. Of it he wrote, “The boat goes on, forever anchored in the same place.”

The cast of characters depicted in the Spirit of Haida Gwaiiprovides an index to themes embodied by Reid throughout his lifetime, and several that appear in his works.

My Inuit calendar offers this artwork for July by Kenojuak Ashevak - “Between Friends.”

The stonecut print depicts 3 stylized birds - an owl in the center with wings outspread, embracing ravens on each side. The birds are mostly shades of black with pops of yellow and red on feet and faces. The background is cream colored.

Awaiting the fun while I cower my cellar, lol. Jim, I found a great retirement gig for you in Norway. This guy was carving decorations and replicas of artifacts for the Viking museum. He did the carvings over the doorway and is working on some side planks.

Back home again, here are a few more scenes from my recent Norway trip. Info in the alt text.

The exquisite scenery never ends. This is the town of Reine, which Norwegian’s voted as the prettiest town in the Lofoten Islands. As if everything wasn’t beautiful enough, you see it twice with the mirror image in the water.

Another view of Reine. I didn’t expect the temps to be in the mid 60s in the Arctic Circle! Other than one day of downpours when we were in Oslo, we had sunny, beautiful weather every day.

A fisherman‘s hut with a grassy roof (“torvtaks”) which are pretty common in the small villages.

Yay Norway! We have a day and a half in Oslo before heading north. Tiring travels to get here but seems well worth it so far.

The spectacular Oslo Opera & Ballet - designed by Snøhetta, it looks like an iceberg rising out of the water. You can climb onto the roof.

Across from the Opera House we watched hearty souls diving and swimming in fairly frigid waters.

We learned that the diving place is also a sauna. Quite a contrast with the modern opera house.

Oh that sucks. I don't think you should crap on young people's dreams like that - the world breaks us fast enough on its own. Made me think of one of my favorite poems by Vachel Lindsay.

While in Boston over the weekend, I went to see the “The Moonwalkers: A Journey with Tom Hanks,” an immersive AV doc about the NASA missions to the moon from 1969-72. This pic shows a future astronaut watching the landing of the lunar module.

A young boy is sitting on a floor reflecting the moon’s surface, totally absorbed in a clip of the landing of the lunar module. The immersive experience makes it appear that he’s on the moon.
