Mildly interesting: Pliny the Younger talks about how, a few days after the eruption of Vesuvius, the sun seemed dimmer and yellowish, like during an solar eclipse—and he had in fact seen an eclipse eight years before the eruption, when he was about 9 or 10 years old

If you’re wondering, I was looking up “Cinderella story” used as a metaphor

You might be like Aella, why did you not just follow some simple online tutorials? And the answer is I tried, a few times. I made it print
'hello world' and do basic math. I got bored real fast. I wanna learn python to do data analysis on the data I have, I'm goal driven.

I don't wanna learn how programming building blocks work as I use them to build a lil rando pile, I want to learn how they work as I use them to build the actual house I want. If what I'm learning isn't connected to a payoff, then I lose the stamina to wade through the problems.

Installation
pip install latincy-vocab
You also need a LatinCy spaCy model. latincy-vocab defaults to la_core_web_lg (best accuracy for citation forms and lemmatization):

pip install "https://huggingface.co/latincy/la_core_web_lg/resolve/main/la_core_web_lg-3.9.4-py3-none-any.whl"
A lighter la_core_web_sm is also available (swap lg→sm in the URL); set PipelineConfig(spacy_model="la_core_web_sm") to use it.

Glosses and citation forms come from latincy-lexicon (Whitaker's Words), which is installed automatically as a dependency — no extra data files, environment variables, or sibling directories required.

I clicked IDLE, and ended up with this screen. I tried to type "help!" but it wouldn't let me type the exclamation point. Finally, a link to a freaking tutorial!

So I started clicking the other icons. ReadMe was unhelpful. I clicked "Install Certificates.command" and my Terminal window opened and started doing stuff. So I guess the certificates have been installed?

OK so I went to python.org and downloaded it. Already promising that it comes with pip, since no one at any point has explained to me what pip is, and at this point I actively do not want to find out. Please do not tell me

This package will install Python 3.14.6 for macOS 10.15 or later.

Python for macOS consists of the Python programming language interpreter and its batteries-included standard library to allow easy access to macOS features. It also includes the Python integrated development environment, IDLE. You can also use the included pip to download and install third-party packages from the Python Package Index.

At the end of this install, click on Install Certificates to install a set of current SSL root certificates.

As background, around 2018 I tried to get Python working and the experience was so frustrating that it still leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I relate very very strongly to this thread

At this point I'm deep in the murky waters of a land I do not understand. I don't know why python isn't just letting me import a csv, I don't know why there's a chain of other "installs" I have to do, if they're even installs. I don't know how to track what I've installed.

Every google for help I do is useless. Each page is full of terms I don't understand at *all*. They're like "Oh solving that error is simple, just take the library and shove it into the jenga package loader so you can execute the lab function with a pasta variation".

My body is tense. I feel like a shaken soda can. Angry tears are starting to well. I'm trying to install pip by punching foreign commands into this cruel black hole, dimly aware I'm probably making a hundred glaring errors I cannot possibly know about. I don't know what pip is.
