Here is what the NC supreme court said in 1843, when gun carry was much more common because of tech developments making pistols more reliable.

A gun is an "unusual weapon," wherewith to be armed and clad. No man amongst us carries it about with him, as one of his everyday accoutrements — as a part of his dress — and never, we trust, will the day come when any deadly weapon will be worn or wielded in our peace-loving and law-abiding State, as an appendage of manly equipment.

My article got cited today by a 7th Circuit decision upholding Illinois's assault weapon prohibition. The Court used it to reject the argument that modern mass shootings aren't a new issue rather than accepting the analogy directly, but still pretty cool.

Neither of the plaintiffs’ counterarguments persuades us
otherwise. They emphasize (echoed by the dissenting opinion) the district court’s conclusion that “[m]ass murder has
been a fact of life in the United States since the mid-nineteenth
century,” accusing the defendants of overlooking atrocities
committed against groups like Native Americans and slaves.
But this asserted problem of “mass murder” is framed at too
high a level of generality, obscuring distinctions with important consequences for how a legislature might respond.
When the Second and Fourteenth Amendments were ratified,
mass killings were a “group activity,” Bianchi, 111 F.4th at 463,
relying on “primitive firearms and melee weapons” because
individuals lacked “the means to inflict mass casualties on
their own,” Lamont, 153 F.4th at 239. A regulatory response to
that problem was not to impose a targeted restriction on certain arms, no one of which was principally responsible for the
lawlessness; rather, it was to target armed groups. And that is

just what Founding- and Reconstruction-era legislatures did.

needed to carry out a mass killing used to come from an aggregation of people, now it comes from an AR-15 and largecapacity magazines—a problem for which the historical solution is self-evidently unfit. The difference between the shameful history on which the plaintiffs rely and the problem facing
modern legislatures therefore weakens the inference we can
draw from the lack of historical regulations that are extremely

My family and I went to Gettysburg for the first time earlier this year and you really can't stand on Cemetery Ridge and continue thinking that Lee was a genius. It's so far in the complete open against a dug in opponent with loads of artillery.

I saw this exhibit and thought "wow this athlete was really generous because they gave up all their medals!" I was extremely wrong. This is only 16 of 55. Trischa Zorn-Hudson won 41 Gold Medals! She had multiple Paralympics with double digit gold medals.
