We have no way of knowing how many of the lawsuits Rowling threatened to fund had any merit. But on the topic of anti-SLAPP statutes, they typically allow for even non-frivolous lawsuits to be dismissed. Eg the bill currently before the UK House of Lords:
The odd thing is that that's the problem that choosing Sir Keir Starmer was supposed to fix. Labour went with someone who had an impressive career outside of politics. Now they're back to this:
Not to be cynical, but that sounds like a highly successful SLAPP to me.
Yesterday was the 15th anniversary of the day when I splurged and bought a 1st class ticket to go from Florence to Pisa airport, only to discover that Trenitalia had forgotten to attach a 1st class carriage. As you can see, all the 1st class passengers could claim the price difference back. 😇
However much I am told that the UK doesn’t have a presidential system, I can’t help but notice that the highlighted bit is pretty much verbatim what American conservatives say when they explain why their president must be able to hire and fire officials without restrictions.
Just like it’s worth remembering that words are elastic. When people talk about “all men”, they rarely mean literally everyone. That is as true today, of all days, as it was 250 years ago.
I always like this picture of Otto von Habsburg (who died in 2011) with his great-uncle emperor Franz-Joseph II (of Sissi and becoming emperor in 1848 fame).
Hmmm... (From the new EHRC Statutory Code of Practice assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6a0de6...)
And this is what the government is saying about lobbying merger clearances being too difficult at the moment.
My favourite bit from the King's Speech so far is that the government proposes to "clarify" the CMA's jurisdictional rules. At least we know that IBM approves of the idea that fewer of its acquisitions should be investigated by the CMA, and that it should be easier to lobby against the CMA.
Laten we eens iets anders proberen.
The pointlessness of (Schengen non-compliant) border checks illustrated. I’m on the motorway queuing before the German border checks (15 minutes delay). That white car can just drive across the border without ever seeing a customs officer.
For example, in my field, here is the dictum of the CJEU in Illumina v. Commission.
However much I appreciate @joshuarozenberg.bsky.social’s legal commentary, some of his opinions are quite unfortunate. You’d expect a career journalist to have more respect for the freedom of expression.
