Before the mid-1920s, paper maps were “aspirational,” they described how a route was supposed to look but not how it actually operated. Motorists used a guide like the AAA Blue Book with descriptions. You had to reset your odometer for each trip and ask locals who often lied for fun.

I completely forgot the most interesting thing in Fairhope, the “Roundhouse,” aka “Tolstoy Park.” A hermit-like guy from Idaho built his beehive shaped abode from self-cast cement blocks and scavenged bricks c. 1900. It’s in Montrose, a couple of miles north. Now in a parking lot.
