Like crème brûlée, I've a soft and sweet center encased by a burnt, cynical shell. Paid video editor, unpaid writer. he | him | hymn Letterboxd:
Mariachi trumpets and taiko drumming in the air, running children with lego sets and the elderly resting on benches with a book, the smells of pupusas, burgers, and gumbo off food trucks, and a dozen languages overheard—all out for the central library’s 100th. It’s a good day in Los Angeles.
Need an excuse not to grade my classes first. But also this is the best US jersey (and maybe one of the best WC fits ever?):
Today I’m marathoning all four of these beautiful monstrosities, and each one I am watching for the first time.
I can hear his gasp when he finds out he missed being mayor and then learns who is and it sounds like his gasp from the Muppet*Vision show
Democracy and all that but California really should figure out a better way to vet candidates to govern the 4th largest economy in the world
Taking Marcia Lucas’s death to say that your favorite filmmakers were made by these four women: Dede Allen Verna Fields Marcia Lucas Thelma Schoonmaker Giants of their field, forever my artistic inspirations.
Pink and Say, a picture book and true story of a wounded Union boy who recovers in a house with a runaway Black boy his age and mom. When my mom and I read it, we were sobbing by the end. I’d then make my teachers read it and get the whole class crying. So yes I’ve always been a melancholic shit.
And 2.5 years later, tonight’s the last episode of this complete watch through. That’s: –15 shows –55 seasons –1031 episodes –14 movies –8 docs …of official Trek watching. And because I like to suffer in hard mode, I tossed in unofficial Trek related stuff: –3 shows –5 seasons –57 episodes –1 movie
Reminds me of this chaotic Schrader story where he fell hard for Nastassja Kinski while making Cat People and flew to Paris to find her. From Biskind’s Easy Riders, Raging Bulls
Celebrating the end of grading and start of summer with a bowl of my bootleg ramen—cheers and eat well!
Here's the top, objectively best patch in the league. How're you gonna boo a hospital? Especially one that did *work* during the worst of COVID. The old patch was a giant, gaudy eyesore. This is a huge upgrade—simple, color matching, clean. Congrats to the Mets for finally winning something. 3.3/5
The patch is jarring. The Switch 2 alt is repellent. But did you know Mario's named after the landlord of Nintendo’s Washington office? Nintendo has a long history in WA, location of their American HQ. Plus it’s Nintendo. There’s some kid who's now a Mariners fan over it. That’s not nothing. 3.17/5
A “G" inside a baseball diamond shape—simple and clean. Though it’s very goofy to advertise your own ownership group. Guggenheim's best known as a museum in New York, so that’s odd. Odder still is the larger consortium’s nebulous and scattershot holdings. Fitting for the Los Angeles Deferments. 3/5
I should hate it. But it’s small, like it knows these patches are an abomination and it wants to stay out of it. And it works with the yellow. Besides, Sheetz isn’t just the way a pirate swears, it’s a family owned convenience store chain around PA and nearby states. A local yokel patch! 2.67/5
We’ve tipped into "better than average" territory. Yes, another finance group, but the Rice family founded MassMutual, politicians going back to the Mass. Bay Colony. A tad bulky, but tastefully patriotic. It works for a legacy team like the Sawx, who finally beat the Yankees in one thing. 2.58/5
The DBacks's slow slither to their objectively better purple and teal colors is helped by the patch’s touch of color. Avnet’s a fairly inoffensive electronics distributor in Phoenix. And if you squint, the "A" sorta looks like a snake head. Squint harder and the DBacks look like winning team. 2.3/5
The second Motorola sponsor! But as a company near Chicago, this fits better. Plus, radios and baseball go together like Murphy’s before a Cubs game. The Galvin bros maybe even celebrated the back-to-back wins in 07 and 08. If only the patch was a quarter smaller, then it’d be less obnoxious. 2.25/5
All the Vegas teams are less for fans and more to promote Vegas. So a literal ad sorta makes sense except for the tiny detail of not being in Vegas yet. It’s snazzy, but all I see is the gambling that’s overtaken sports. Man, we’re gonna have a reckoning with that BS. Until then, viva baby. 2.17/5
What’s going on here? Up close, it’s bizarre. Far away, it’s more confusing than distracting. All very Angels. An Orange County construction shop that loves to assert their Evangelical roots (Get it? “Foundation.” No? Read Matthew 7:25). About right for an OC team that pretends they’re LA. 2.17/5
A circle, abstract squiggly, and matching colors make a top five looking patch. Owner Ray Davis also owns Energy Transfer, and we all like brand synergy. What we don’t like? An oil company responsible for the Dakota Access Pipeline. But hey, destroying Natives is just Texas Rangers tradition. 2.08/5
