Within hours of Kennedy’s confirmation, Louisiana Surgeon General Dr. Ralph Abraham and Deputy Surgeon General Dr. Wyche Coleman, III—neither of whom is an infectious disease specialist or has any significant public health experience—released a statement on the Louisiana Department of Health’s (LDH) website explaining that LDH would no longer promote mass vaccination and that LDH employees are banned from holding vaccine events and promoting vaccines. In November 2024, Abraham and Coleman circulated a dubious form letter to exempt health care professionals from vaccinations. It has also been revealed that, despite his claims otherwise, Abraham might not be a board-certified family physician. Abraham and Coleman’s February 13 statement is an official version of the mandate that all LDH employees received in November 2024 and contains cherry-picked data and anti-vaccination and anti-public health language masked as “individual choice.” Republican Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy has spoken out against this mandate, though he also voted to confirm Kennedy as head of HHS.

Finally sitting down to read @nikostratis.com 'The Dad Rock That Made Me a Woman.' Just finished the second chapter (on Wilco but also so much more than Wilco), which made me cry a little. I will have more to say, of course but, two chapters in, I am already heartbroken and inspired.

I went to the bookstore to pick up my copy of 'The Dad Rock That Made Me a Woman' by @nikostratis.com (so excited to read and write about it, expect more posts about it) and ended up with two other books, because the world is scary and we need more stories (and my impulse control is currently low).

A fabulous stack of books, held by a semi-tan person and against the backdrop of the steering wheel of a 2001 Honda CRV. In order, from top to bottom, the books are: Roberto Bolaño's 'By Night in Chile,' Fernanda Melchor's 'Hurricane Season,' and the much anticipated memoir and debut book from Niko Stratis, 'The Dad Rock That Made Me a Woman.'

In an attempt to remember that there is still good: Lately, Calliope has taken to sitting with me on the couch at night to cuddle against me and purr and meow-scream at me when I stop petting her. It is the absolute best. 🖤

Update: I saw them last night and you did not exaggerate. It was absolutely spellbinding and exhilarating and a respite from the greater reality. A little girl (maybe 5, 6 years old) stood near my friend and me at the front (with her parent). She was enthralled, and it was beautiful. 🖤
