Community Engagement as a Catalyst for Clean Water Quality Management

Water quality management occurs in a myriad of contexts, and the appropriate solution to provide clean water in a given context is a function of local water chemistry, user needs, and existing institutions and infrastructure. Sustained engagement with affected communities is not ancillary but foundational to water quality innovation, informing problem definition, shaping technological design, and enabling durable, real-world implementation. Effective engagement builds relationships necessary to incorporate community members’ lived experience, context-specific needs, and local expertise as users, partners, and/or co-creators in the research process. This symposium will present advances in the development and implementation of water quality management technology guided by engagement with affected communities, with a particular focus on underserved communities whose needs may be non-obvious to the research community. We invite presentations on water quality testing and treatment solutions that illustrate how community engagement can guide key technical decisions and ensure successful implementation as well as sustained adoption in the intended context. Water contaminants of interest include salinity, trace metal/metalloids, organic chemicals, fertilizer runoff, and microbes. In addition, we invite perspectives on best practices to guide community engagement during development and implementation of water quality management solutions, including considerations of ethics and equity when engaging with underestimated and/or under-resourced communities.
Note: The focus of this symposium is solutions to provide clean water for drinking and/or agricultural use; abstracts primarily addressing wastewater management should be submitted to one of the ENVR symposia focusing on wastewater.

When I did NMR for the first time in grad school, I printed a copy of my first NMR spectrum, wrote "My first NMR, Michael Bono, age 26" on it in crayon, and put it on the lab fridge. Never stop making jokes about your time in school.

Some words from five years ago that are well worth remembering today. "Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts" - Margaret Mead

A Facebook status from a user named "Kamikaze Kelly" dated March 16, 2020 with the following text:

"Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones.

But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal.

'A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts', Mead said.

He did clarify in April 2019 that he does not financially or ideologically support March for Life (see final tweet in the thread screenshots), so while this is something that he may have supported in the past he has since ended that support.

We also believe separation of church and state is crucial to our nation flourishing. Our votes go toward the Democratic Party. Additionally we are troubled by what the Republican Party has become and do not want to be associated with it." A response tweet from Louis Peitzman (@LouisPeitzman) says "Appreciate you taking the time to respond. I hope you understand that this is a terrifying time for reproductive rights in this country. Regardless of your personal feelings on abortion, it will continue to happen, and women will die without access to safe and legal abortion."
