Ten weeks ago today - to the hour - with a deathly case of peritonitis from a perforated appendix, 8 days after an emergency gall-bladder removal. I was in very bad shape. This photo is moments before an emergency open appendectomy was performed. Feeling extraordinarily grateful.

This year’s Emerald Gem melon project is 104 days old, not including today. The surface reticulations become older-looking, as some are here, then the skin begins to turn yellow-orange, then the stem will start to dry and separate. Eventually they’ll fall. But I usually pick before falling.

These deer. The hoop needs to be open for air! I’ve blocked with netting stapled to wood pieces, other physical obstructions, hanging line with tin foil. Each frame is 1 minute. I work for 9 minutes, hoop is empty for about 12, and the deer spends 7 minutes before I catch him. Gross!

Not sure if you've seen or read the "Hyperintense Kill Rates..." Science article from Jan 2019, but when I show this movie (part of the supplementary material) in class students are shocked. They audibly gasp then the line begins to peak. This is one way I try (of many) to convey scope and scale.

Timelapse of 3.5 15-hr days in a portion of the emerald gem melon project. Photo taken every 10 minutes. Video then slowed to 80% of concatenated speed. The melons are clearly achieving pendulousness. Today is day 91 since planting. I expect enlargement and ripening in 2 weeks. Mesmerizing to me.
