Time to charge the power walls. PS PS season arrives tomorrow in my neck of the woods. And to be clear, I am grateful that PG&E is responding to evolving conditions on the ground where I live.
Here's a better sketch of what occurred. The Bridge Fire burned from S to N in 2024. The Summit Fire just burned from N to S. The perimeter of the Bridge Fire is in grey. The spot that the Summit Fire ran into is marked as a red arc. Wrightwood is circled. Wildfires require fuel. No fuel=no spread.
A great illustration of how recent wildfire burn scars create protection from current fires. The absence of fuel in the burn scar from the Bridge Fire (2024) in and around Wrightwood made it feasible for FFs to stop the Summit Fire from approaching or threatening the community. Wrightwood circled.
What is this object called and what is it for? Are we right to think that it is like a hang dry rack for fire hoses?

Iron Fire is apparently into Eureka Utah tonight. Really hope that everyone and their animals are out of there. Fire season has really arrived in a hurry the last few days.

Nebraska just cannot catch a break this year. Assume the north flank of this is a firing operation but a lot of expansion eastward toward Crawford in the last day or so. Here’s hoping they have a good day today and that the winds cooperate.
Also also, the rooms at Asilomar are like a Time Machine back to the 1960s. ❤️
And also, Coffey Park and most of the burned area in Altadena are not in the designated hazard zones either. Those maps do a great job of simulating wildland fire but much less well on structure ignition. Areas in blue below are 0-1 mile of hazard zones. Most of the structure loss happened there.
Sitting at Asilomar listening to Tim Profeta talk about climate litigation with a bunch of judges. Lovely and depressing I take solace in that Asilomar is such a timeless place to think about hard problems for society.

The burners at Fort Hunter Liggett get it done. Almost 15k acres of burning underway. Wow. We should be asking how Calfire and USFS can achieve this level of outcome. Resources no doubt have a lot to do with it but I also wonder about permitting exceptions for Dep of War.

A new rule of thumb needs to be that we don’t bomb people with whom we are trying to negotiate a piece agreement. Seems kind of obvious to me. Our adversaries have been clear with us about how this affects their thinking. And yet apparently our government is still confused.
Sandy Fire burning towards the site of the largest ever radiological release in the US. From a Na cooled nuclear power plant that melted down in the late 1950s. Been thinking a lot about the Santa Susanna site as we “move fast and break things” on the small modular reactor front in the Trump Admin.

Pine Mountain Fire in Eastern Oregon was a prescribed fire that escaped prescription and was declared a wildfire a couple of days ago. Now 25% contained. Fire effects have been positive - moderate heat from the fire overnight. Containment is now at 25%. No structure loss.
Palmer drought index. Worst ever. Worse than the dust bowl. Fire season is coming.
