In this journey I've been on for all these years, there have been so many places that have shaped me & made me what I am today. Do I sometimes wish I'd lived away from STL, even for a few years? Definitely, but of the things in my life I could change, that's not too high on the list.
This neighborhood is an amazing place to live. From the accessibility, amenities, amazing places to visit and eat, I've loved living here for the past decade (and no, I won't tell you which one of these is my house).
I wore myself out by the time I got home & forgot to take pics of Shaw, so here's some of my favorite over the years (plus one from @chickenjoestl).
It's gonna be hard coming back here when the old buildings are finally gone, but I hope this neighborhood, and everyone who lives here has the brightest of futures, because they deserve it. They deserve so much. #home #memories #myhistory
It may not have been the greatest place, but the people there were special & I'll always remember how they took care of me.
Transition. It only seems fitting that the place I lived during the major transitions going on in my family, and for the first decade of my transition to adulthood, is going through a transition of its own.
From walking to the school bus stop with my sister, to planting trees & flowers (some are still there) to the block parties my mom used to host, no matter how people disparage this area, I've never felt safer or happier anywhere else.
If you asked me what comes to mind when I think of home, this will always be my answer. I was 3 when we moved here & didn't leave until I was 18. Almost every childhood memory I have, good and bad, is centered on this house & this little pocket of the city.
From the day my 5x great-grandfather Griffin Brander settled into a home on City Block #1067 (25xx Warren Street), the northern part of Jeff-Vander-Lou has been a place for my family to call home, so much that four successive generations made their own homes there.
I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge an area that, even though I've never lived there, is an essential part of my background.
I thought I would recognize today by visiting all the places I've ever lived. I think it's important to me not to just focus on the houses, but the neighborhoods too, and what made them special.
Why are people acting like it's not a normal thing to pull out your ID at the coffee shop? 😜🎂
Celebrated the Mill Creek exhibit at the History Museum with A Night at Peacock Alley concert last night. An incredible show and a wonderful family affair!!
And that's the last time I'm sharing a joke with my sister-in-law. 🤦🏾♂️
