Not since 1975 have so many Americans wanted government action to "improve the standard of living" of the poor, according to the General Social Survey, a long-running poll. They want someone to stop Al from wrecking society.
An influential group of socialist academics provides the intellectual ballast for these views. The work of Isabella Weber of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, suggests that businesses' pricing power means that the modern economy serves executives and shareholders better than it does ordinary people. In a paper last year Ms Weber and her colleagues analysed companies' earnings calls, finding that many firms took advantage of inflation to
"protect or even increase profits".
