Want to know what I'm up to? Building Friction Bots for educators! Join us for a demo where you'll participate in a custom simulation, see how transcripts reveal student thinking, and discuss with fellow faculty. 📅 Wednesday, August 19th, 1:00–2:00 PM EST Register here: lnkd.in/gXYNPGjh
(Check out John Swope and Peter Shea’s work for more on simulations.) And Michelle Kassorla often says we need to teach students to “fight back against the #AI” during chats. Her approach underscores the need for more of this method. #AIEdu #EduAI #AIinEducation
Friend just sent this to me. Read the first letter of every name in the Gemini contributors list.
But — there's a twist: Writers who started without AI and later adopted it showed improved engagement and richer revision. Writers who relied on AI early struggled when it was removed.
Language quality was more homogenous with #ChatGPT. LLM-written essays clustered tightly and reused the same phrases. Brain-only essays were more original.
Brain activity was strongest in unaided writing. EEG scans showed reduced memory rehearsal and semantic processing in LLM users.
Findings: LLM users consistently underperformed across three vectors — neurologically, linguistically, and behaviorally.
But - we still need to respond. How? Reframe. The AI system is not an academic butler, it’s a sparring partner. Note: This is different than thought partner, which is still a crutch. #AIinEducation #EduAI #AIinEdu
What's the first step to achieving that goal? #1: We need to reframe the relationship. When students open up an AI system, they see a butler, a servant, and a personal assistant. That’s not their fault (or ours), it’s how we are being marketed to. #AiinEducation #EduAI #AIinEdu #Education
Your #AI isn't neutral. Every time ChatGPT eagerly suggests "next steps" or Claude quietly waits for your lead, you're experiencing deliberate philosophical choices about human autonomy embedded in code. Choosing your "cafe companion" is crucial. LINK: shorturl.at/rBy2R #AIinEducation #EduAI

In the AI era, transparency in learning is vital. Asking students to submit AI-generated chats fosters critical thinking, metacognition in writing, and academic integrity. It’s not just about what they think but how they think, promoting deeper understanding in a tech-driven world.
Yesterday, I facilitated a 3-hour "Grade the Chats" session with the Georgia Independent School Association, and it was such an exciting experience! It was my first time diving deep with faculty, and the energy was incredible. The positive feedback and interest in pilot programs made it even better!
How do we build a healthier relationship with AI? For adults, it starts with unlearning old tech habits and embracing a thoughtful approach. For kids, it’s about introducing nuance from the start. Can we find the middle ground and reshape this approach? What does balance with AI look like to you?

Couldn't agree more! Below is the title slide of Section 2 of my #AILiteracy PD for educators. It's also what @educatingai.bsky.social and I are working on together rt now. It's very complicated to demonstrate and explain, but it is possible. @shannonvallor.bsky.social @annamillsoer.bsky.social
