Looks like MapTap is pulling its data from a different geological era?
National Archives of Ireland have this county dropdown that is curiously almost, but not quite, alphabetical. It isn't geographical, exactly, it isn't the order in Irish, it's just different enough to trip me up.
Looking at a map of wards in Philadelphia as they existed in 1900 (link in alt text); the South Philly ones seem a little crazy to me. That was the most natural division? I guess relatively few people lived by the Schuylkill then?
So, for modern references, he uses PNG cultures a lot, which, while in a state context, the state is weak and far away, and they're surrounded by numerous similar groups. But fair enough. Here's an example of an archaeological case in the PNW, which AFAIK didn't do agriculture

Irish genealogists: how plausible is it that "Croke" and "Croheen" reference the same last name in the 19th century? I *think* these all refer to the same woman, but am not 100% sure.
...and how my council did. The Greens came one vote shy of winning a majority. Is this the famous "banter result?" Arguably a good result--any proposal requires some buy-in from the other left-of-center parties, but not a lot. So can't be too silly, but won't be too hard to make it happen.
council elections are great because you see all kinds of weird shit. it's also at a low enough level so you can trick yourself into thinking it's saying something coherent instead of being a weird combination of ward and FPTP effects
UK: Guardian, FT. Period outside US: NYT, Atlantic. Period inside ...how have I lived in the UK and read newspapers here for six years and not noticed this lol
