THE RIGHT TO NOT VOTE: State Assembly candidate Conrad Blackburn boasted about not voting for the Democratic Party’s presidential candidates in either 2016 or 2024 — and called Trump’s first election “a necessary evil,” Chris reports.

Blackburn, a democratic socialist vying to unseat Assemblymember Jordan Wright in this month’s primary, made the comments in question on a Twitter account he has since restricted access to so only pre-approved followers can view his posts. Playbook was able to view his old missives via an internet archive.

Blackburn’s declaration that he didn’t vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016 or Kamala Harris in 2024 could unnerve middle-of-the-road Democrats in Wright’s deep-blue Harlem district.

But fellow progressives may also be peeved by other aspects of Blackburn’s voting record.

Houston state Rep. Mano DeAyala, the former chair of the Hispanic Republicans of Texas, questioned the wisdom of alienating non-Christians who want to join the party. He acknowledged the “Christian warrior’s” anger, disappointment and frustration with politics, but said the way forward was to “be Christians,” “be the good spirit” and to “love each other like ourselves.”

“What I’m about to say may be a little sacrilegious, but working with the Hispanic Republicans of Texas, there was a point here,” DeAyala said. “We’re trying to grow the party. We are trying to bring more people in this tent.”

When it comes time to vote in the midterms, Tarek Hussein plans to support his party where he feels it’s deserved.

“I will vote Republican for the good Republican candidate,” he said.

Mohamed Hussein, said the convention left himself asking questions.

“How can I possibly get behind a party that tells me to leave, that says convert or leave?” he asked. “How do they think that is going to be some kind of winning strategy?”

Asked whether he would vote for Talarico, a Presbyterian theologian who frequently discusses his Christian faith on the campaign trail, Hussein said he would vote for the candidate that champions religious liberty and economic prosperity.

“I will vote along those principles, but what I saw at the convention is not conservatism, so I’m going to assess in November and vote along with my values,” he said. “Absolutely, I will be voting for Republicans who denounce this extremism.”

“I’m trying to process how somebody can say this and then try to pray for me,” Hussein said.

But he said he forgave Scarborough.

Rattled by the experience, Mohamed Hussein isn’t sure what it means for his politics going forward.

“Many, many hear these things, the messaging, and think that they’re dog whistles,” Hussein said. “I was hopeful that I’d come here and get a clarification. What we got was kind of a confirmation.”

“While, philosophically, we can agree that CAIR is a terrorist organization and we would not promote them or materially help them, we’re moving the goalpost,” said Gaylyn Devine, an SREC member representing their area in Senate District 11, who defended their place at the gathering. “They followed the rules. They voted in the Republican primary. One of them has been, like, a 40-year Republican.”

Halabi, a teacher, declined to say how she would vote in November, but said that she is a Republican and always votes.

Halabi and her husband, Amjad Muhtaseb, were both registered as delegates for the convention.

Muhtaseb, an engineer and business owner, said Muslims are conservative by nature.

“We believe in Adam and Eve,” he said. “We don’t believe in this, multiple gender. We don’t drink. We don’t gamble. We are against pornography.”

They hope to bring more Muslims into the Republican Party.

Coinbase donated to President Trump's $300 million White House ballroom project as an appeal to the administration, Emilie Choi, the cryptocurrency exchange's president and COO, said at Axios' BFD event on Tuesday.

The big picture: Major companies including Google, Amazon, Palantir Technologies donated to the project, which critics have argued amounts to a pay-for-play relationship with the federal government.

Driving the news: Axios' Dan Primack asked Choi whether the donation was intended "to keep good relations with the White House," to which she replied "sure."

What they're saying: "Frankly I don't even have a problem" with the donation, Choi said.

"I think if you go to D.C., there's a lot of buildings that need to be updated, and so if private industry has to do that, it is what it is."

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, affirmed their allegiance to the embattled oysterman in a late-night statement. Platner weathered a storm of scandals in the weeks leading up to his dominating victory over Governor Janet Mills, who suspended her campaign in late April.

Platner was a guest at a big Khanna finance event last month in Palo Alto, according to a prominent Silicon Valley bundler who was granted anonymity to candidly discuss the campaign. Platner was a hit among the donors, the bundler said, winning people over with his personal story and acknowledging his faults.

Before being elected New York City’s comptroller in 2021, Brad Lander made a pledge: If he won, he would not — under any circumstances — run for mayor while serving as the Big Apple’s top bean counter. The comptroller job, he declared, “is too big of a factor in the lives of 9 million New Yorkers” to treat it as anything but a full-time focus.

Lander, of course, broke that commitment, as he ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2025.

Return the Senate to majority rule. The Constitution assumes majority vote except where
supermajorities are specified. Yet the filibuster now allows a minority to block legislation
supported by most Americans. At a minimum, the Senate should return to the talking
filibuster, where senators must stand on the floor and defend their position. Furthermore,
everyone living in the United States deserves representation, including in places like
Washington DC.

He assured them there was nothing, but he predicted his adversaries would lie about him, according to a person familiar with the private discussions.

On the campaign trail, Mr. Platner has consistently worked to reassure voters who have been rattled by what they have read about his messy personal history. He has said that he had not lived a “very complicated” life.
