If you thought it was real, you've been duped.

The image is Al generated. OpenAI's verification tool detected a SynthID on the photo, which is a termark automatically added to photos so they can be inuntified as AI-generated content.

There are other signs the photo is fake, too.

For instance, the tubes coming out of the man's mouth in the photo don't connect to anything, fact-checking site Snopes reported. The background is also warped and parts of the photo are unnaturally blurry, Yaho News pointed out.

It begins with putting on our Big People Pants and having conversations as free as possible from the silly assumptions, bad math, and wish fulfillment behind so many 'conventional wisdoms' circulating in our political discourse - for instance, that tariffs could replace income taxes (just no), that lower (always lower) taxes are required for growth and prosperity (they aren't, also see Kansas), and even some conventions that we may hold dear, like the tempting comfort-food that promises progressive goals are easily achieved via This One Simple Trick® of making the wealthiest pay their fair share (sorry y'all, but also no, though of course we definitely should and they absolutely should... like, starting yesterday).

Finally, in the name of Christmas and banana pudding, it begins with the firm insistence that if taxes are the cost of a civilized society, we
can damn well act like civilized people when we're talking about taxes.

The only option, as usual, is the only option, and remains the same
today as it ever was...

...to be the adults in the room we'd like to see in the world.

Hell yeah, that's what I'm talking' about! (Though, I'm all for circuit-breaker provisions which exempt those in real danger of being unable to pay, which includes *some* seniors, that's not at all what this proposal to "freeze tax rates for <insert swath of voters>" is about.)

• The larger idea that you can fund a Scandinavian-style welfare state by only taxing BILLIONAIRES is a dangerous lie that fundamentally plays into Republican anti-tax tropes. The kind of safety net El- Sayed wants - which includes universal public health insurance more ambitious than Canada's — requires higher taxes not only on
the wealthy but on the middle class.

• Current tax levels aren't enough to properly sustain even the
relatively modest social welfare commitments of the US right now.

• Of all the groups to exempt from tax increases, seniors are the least deserving — this is flat-out upward wealth redistribution on balance. Moreover, providing incentives for seniors to stay in houses that could be used to house young families instead of
downsizing is insanely bad housing policy.

• It's the least important point, but to me there's something particularly amusingly unserious about "just tax the billionaires" as a universal solvent in the context of local property taxes. Can't fund schools or police because your property tax base is shrinking? Just
tax every billionaire living in Flint or Saginaw! Problem solved!

This is pernicious, reactionary bullshit, and if he's the nominee I hope
someone can convince him to cut it out.

The guy hired to "ensure election integrity" is no longer the state's elections liaison. After reports revealed text messages showing Dallas Woodhouse pushing local election officials to reject an early voting site at WCU and eliminate Sunday voting elsewhere, the Auditor's Office has reassigned him and eliminated the $110k/yr position.

Woodhouse, who led the state GOP from 2015 to 2019, was hired into the new role last year with a salary of $110,000 after Auditor Dave Boliek gained control over appointments to election boards.

One obscure example of absolutely “sticking the transcendence landing” would be Michael Tolkin’s “The Rapture” (1991) feat. Mimi Rogers & David Duchovny. Though in this case it “sticks” NOTHING ELSE. It’s a terrible film & a damn shame you have to sit thru it for that humdinger of a conclusion.

There is demonstrable value in everyone having an involvement in the act of paying taxes. @jamisonfoser.bsky.social argues the point extraordinarily well here:

But it isn't just a matter of math.
There is deep civic importance in having a shared understanding that we're all in this together.
Exempting half the state from income taxes actively works against that essential communal spirit. It reinforces right-wing everyone-for-themselves attitudes that funding the government is bad and people shouldn't have to do it.
It adds weight to right-wing rhetoric that people don't deserve public goods if they "don't pay any taxes.

Several hundred people have refused to leave despite an order to evacuate because of severe inclement weather that is approaching. Some are even arguing with Secret Service agents.
