From my WIP, In His Image

Delaia’s breaths were shallow, slowing as he fruitlessly fought the scent. During mass, the smoke was comforting, a sign of prayers rising to God. Kneeling alone in the center of an empty altar, he felt as if he was surrounded by a sinking cloud without any of the freshness fog could offer. He was intolerably warm, pressing his palm into the cold stone. The slight chill was his one tangible connection. The line he was holding onto to keep from slipping as they wanted him to.

On the other, a bed to be shared in piety. Their lives entwined conditionally. A shade away from paradise while simultaneously further than any measurable distance from Eden. The gifts they received from God were too gracious. Enlightenment neither of them had spoken a word about since the visions started, until Jorah unwound the cloth.

His voice was as saturated with concern. “You're still bleeding, Del.. Why? What did you see?”

Hearing that name felt like home and in a place so far and yet so close, it stung just as badly as the air did hitting where his blood was spilled. Delaia couldn't give his assumption, nor did he want to speak the entire truth. Jorah would certainly be told the next day anyway. They shared the responsibility as near equals. No amount of prayer would change that, especially not any of the conflicted words that came pounding out of Delaia's heart.
