In the late summer of 1912, the beaches in Evanston were infested with thousands of rats. The rats had burrowed into the sides of the lake banks, dug holes in the sand, and hid under piers. Most of the rats were extremely large and savage, attacking people who disturbed them. Local bathers struggled to navigate the shores, constantly stepping into the hidden rat holes. John Morgan, the manager of an extermination company tasked with removing the vermin, stated that it was not uncommon for rats to live around the lake's shore because of the quantity of dead fish that was cast to shore by the waves. The weather also played a role since the close proximity to the beaches allowed the rats to swim out in the water during the hot summer.

i think a few of these got skewed but Brad East being that high is correct (maybe not correct enough). I often joke that Brad is who I would be if I went to my second choice (Abilene Christian) instead of Arizona State. And now I have two other scholars I want to read more directly from.

hi @azcentral.com! curious why y'all are using "Department of War" in the subhed of this piece? that's not the official name or AP Style. I am wondering if this is a (small!) error or if it's in the Republic style guide to use "Department of War"?

hed: "ASU launches war strategy program with US government"
subhed: "Arizona State University will offer a new war and strategy master's degree for military members and others selected by the Department of War."

great! there are many other wonderful resources, but i will say that i think a lot of journalists could use a reminder to check the AP Stylebook, which i think is pretty decent on this front. i'm surprised how often outlets that are supposed to hew closely to AP do not do even this basic stuff.

The Associated Press Stylebook entry for "autism spectrum disorder, autism.":

Umbrella terms for a broad range of developmental disorders that can involve widely varying degrees of intellectual, language and social difficulties, and repetitive behaviors. Describe a person as autistic only if relevant to the story, and if a medical diagnosis has been made or the person uses the term. If relatives or others use the term, ask how they know, then consider carefully whether to include the information.
Many autistic people strongly prefer identity-first language: She is autistic; he is an autistic student. Some prefer person-first language: She has autism; people with autism. Try to determine the preference.
When a preference isn’t known, and in describing groups of autistic people, use identity-first language.
Do not use the term an autistic or autistics as a noun unless someone describes themself that way. Do not use ASD. Do not describe someone as being on the spectrum.
Asperger’s syndrome, previously classified separately, is the old name for one form of autism. Do not refer to Asperger’s syndrome unless an individual or family member uses the term. If used by others, explain that it is a form of autism and follow guidelines above.

Not sure if "born again" means something different to Mr. The Serfs, but this just isn't true. Brand stands out because so many born again Christians actually have verses memorized pretty rigorously!
