Highly recommend that part of RMNP. You can see 5 waterfalls along a 5.5-mile hike. I stayed at a campground just a mile down the road from the park entrance.

TIL about the beelike tachinid fly (Adejeania vexatrix). I encountered some in Rocky Mountain National Park yesterday. And I did think it was a bee at first. The bright orange abdomen was not something I had seen before, so I looked it up once I had signal. They like to sip nectar from coneflowers.

But perhaps the most powerful action of all is simply to maintain an awareness (and remind others) that Workism is a spectacle. For most employees, we owe it to each other to remind one another that this work is not, in the grand scheme of things, all that important. It is illusory. No one has ever died over a spreadsheet. The world does not wait with bated breath for product launches. A marketing campaign will not change the world. Almost no one will remember all the work we do. But they might remember the types of people we were, the relationships we had and how we treated the people we worked with.

I feel like someone doesn't understand Gestalt principles and visual hierarchy.

I took my dog on her first hike since she had her TPLO surgeries and arthritis injections. She did great, went about 3 miles. We'd been working up to the distance with walks around the neighborhood, but hadn't gone more than 2.5 miles. Here's Izzy posing for a photo about halfway through our hike.

This trellis chart displays food self-sufficiency rates for 47 Japanese prefectures in FY2019, arranged from highest to lowest across a 10-column grid. Each cell contains a satellite chart — a spiral visualization where one full revolution represents 100% self-sufficiency. The spiral uses color to indicate which century of value is being represented: orange for the first 0–100%, blue for 100–200%, and pink for 200–300%. A hollow dot marks the endpoint of the spiral. The percentage value and prefecture name are displayed in the center of each spiral. Hokkaido leads at 216%, followed by Akita-ken at 205% and Yamagata-ken at 145%. Most prefectures fall below 100%, indicating they produce less food than they consume. Tokyo-to has the lowest rate at 0%.

This weekend, I learned that 1) I have peonies in my yard 2) You put them in a cage to keep them from flopping over. Not sure if I did this at the correct height, but I guess I'll find out in a few weeks (and it's adjustable).

I have now moved on to pepihuates. Do y'all know about Japanese peanuts? This is a Mexican snack that has varying recipes. The way I like it includes cucumber, jicama, Japanese peanuts, tamarind pieces, chamoy sauces, lime juice, tajin, and Valentina sauce. Other versions use Clamato.

My boyfriend has one, and he occasionally prints stuff for me. I have some fun stuff, but the most useful thing he made me was a spacer for spacing my photos in a grid. I have a slight astigmatism that cannot be corrected by contacts so I never know if anything is straight.

This is a wood deck that I am tearing up because it was poorly built and not very safe. It's not connected to any other structure, just sitting on the concrete blocks. If you step on the edge, the whole thing tilts to that side. Turn this into a metaphor for data architecture/engineering.

In this case, I think that generative AI models are very novel and that it's absolutely appropriate to be curious about the ways in which they mimic human creativity and reason, and without contradicting myself at all, I also think that they've been recklessly jammed into commercial software despite not actually being capable of the things tech companies claim they are.
