assuming this is spotify, I can't help you with the random 5 CDs, but turning this option off will stop the irritating TS songs (I always seem to get Take On Me by A Ha for some weird reason)

Spotify settings (click kon your user icon), autoplay option can be switched off to prevent spotify from shoving music down your throat

The most expensive bit of the garden, more than the pond, the bridge, the pots, the plants and the design combined, has been managing the goddamn endless water that plonks itself on top of of us for 8 months of the year

Another picture of the garden landscaping, this time trenches dug and pipes laid down to divert all the rainfall and runoff from the fields around the pond to the outlet channel under the road

Beds mulched

A landscaped garden, mid project. Water flows down a cascade into a large pond banjed with stones either side, flanked by planting beds that are currently just full of bark mulch apart from some stepping stones and a small red acer palmatum on the left and aan acer palmatum boo hi on the right

Placebo RE:CREATED, a less is more reworking of most of their debut album with a bunch of out there remixes of some album and ep songs from the period. Very nice way to revisit an album I played *alot* back in the day, but hasn't had much attention for a good couple of decades

Garden beginning to take shape

The mountain stream into the river, our pond pump and filter alongside the raised area.that may feature a sauna, not framed in iron and soils for the beds

Planks across the pond where a rough temporary bridge will go, to be replaced in a couple of years by a beautiful red Japanese bridge

A walled, raised bed where until recently the ugly red ribin was, bow with African lilies and ferns

Modest Mouse have been offering diminshing returns since the excellent Good News.. started the rot. Success and comfort often unmoor artists. The new album returns to the existential angst of Lonesome.. and Moon.. and I really rather like it! First one I'll start again in some years..err..decades?

It really could have been any of his books, I absolutely devoured Whyndam in my rteens. This one must be his most influential though, the quintessential post apocalypse brought on by man's hubris, lifted almost verbatim by 28 days, walking dead, survivors etc
And given how old it is it has barely aged, it doesn't creak the way Asimov's Foundation does.
My first post toddlerhood required reading for both my kids :)

Sci-fi m is obviously going to be a theme.
And what do we have here... cryptography, world war 2 hijinks, data centres, gold and the stupidity of capitalism and its legal protections.
What's not to like?
Neal Stephenson is a strange fruit. A chap with leanings to be both Tom Clancy and William Gibson whilst occasionally wandering off into high concept sci-fi or pure adventure.
Likeable, off kilter but meanders and sometimes would benefit from more rigorous editing, here he is at his post snow crash pinnacle. A book I am always happy to revisit.

Slight change of pace

This one was much more recent.
I read if shortly after reading Kurzgesagt's book on immunity that taught me that we are basically walking bags of soup of trillions of very very small robots.
I was very receptive to a book about consciousness as an emergent property, and the whole kaboodle has sat heavily on me ever since.
Sod sonnets and poetry about what it is to be human, its just a bunch of cosmic coincidences that allow us to be us amidst the quinillions of internal electrical and chemical pathways that allow us simply to survive (and of course serve) the tyrany of our bacterial overlords.
I guess on my deathbed when I wonder what i did with my life, I can be happy with NMH's observation about how strange it is to be anything at all, and hope that the next generation will only have to deal with the environmental destruction we wrought upon them and not the interest of aliens unburdened by consciousness.
In short, a light hearted comedy that was robbed of a place in Richard and Judy's read of the week list.

Ursula was fully the opposite journey to that which I took with Frank. From childhood to teenage years this book was a comfort read i loved.
Not that long ago I thought I might just give it a go to see how it held up, and it revealed so many new layers, the quality of the writing, the humanity and empathy she embues her stories with.
So i finally read the rest of the books, that just kept getting better.
Her minimalist world building is such a strength that allows her characters, increasingly female (weird phrasing), to truly breathe and allow them to drift off the page for me, in a way ive struggled to do with much since growing up.
Mant books that seemed cavernous when I was young suddenly seem claustrophobic, whizz by in a blink, but with ULG i am still able to get lost in her writing as a grown up. Love her to bits.

Aah Dune. I was rather obsessed with Frank Herbert as a youngster. Yes I read the whole series about 5 times, even the boring company ones, but loved the dosage ones, the Pandora ones even more.
Herbert always gave me the idea that I was ignorant and there was a deep understanding of the world and humanity available to me.
As an adult we parted ways for many years and I dipped my toe in more recently, somewhat reluctant, to confirm what I suspected; mainly that his thoughts were as garbled as everyone else's and whilst his world building was often impressive it was inevitably dragged down by middling writing and opinions that no longer tallies with my worldview.
For its outsize influence on my teenage years and the quality of Villeneuve's take it definitely merits a slot.
Can't wait for his Green Brain film

Whats not to say, early memories of a mum i adored because she wasn't my dad, reading aloud to me stories and characters that I deeply identified with *looking at ye piglet and eeyore* and fired my imagination.
Packed full of English whimsy and never ever patronising its audience, absolte perfection.

Oooh, another surprise drop, Perfect Place by Irish folk duo, Lemoncello. As lovely as ever with an expanded palette and more ambitious scope. Another feather in the cap of contemporary Irish folk alongside Lankum etc
