What's Alberta separatism all about, Alfie? It's all about two inter-related things: allowing Big Oil to do anything it wants without permission from anyone and screwing Indigenous people and environmentalists who might stand in Big Oil's way. Deep down, almost every separatist is simply a slave to the oil industry who wants to bury their head in the tarsands rather than allow any government or any Indigenous group to put restrictions on what is now known to be a toxic industry to the whole planet in the long term and to Indigenous people every day.
So it's encouraging that a second judge has ruled that the failure of the Smith government to consult with First Nations before blessing the petition authors' efforts to gain signatures for their nefarious scheme. Danielle Smith's reaction to the judges' decisions, like that of the egregious Jeffrey Rath, are best described as obscene and genocidal.
Racist oil company lead political prostitute Smith defends her failure to consult with Indigenous people by claiming "the duty to consult is an obligation on government specifically when we’re talking about the impact on treaty rights over hunting, fishing, trapping and when we’re dealing with particular projects." And so you don't have to consult with them about a potential referendum that could remove Alberta from Canada and thereby remove the "duty to consult" that is a constitutional obligation in Canada which Canadian courts interpret in terms of whether the consultation was sincere or a courtesy call? Smith doesn't consult with anyone except her corporate sponsors about anything much. She didn't talk to the Alberta Medical Association before deciding to hack to pieces our current healthcare arrangements. I was "one of them". Not as extreme, but believed that Pierre Elliot Trudeau was the enemy of Alberta and getting rid of him would solve our problems. My immigrant parents both voted Liberal. We had some great supper table talks. This was late teens, early 20s. I was a conditioned Albertan.

Sadly that wealth fund solves nothing. It's got a lot of issues ...

1. Sovereign funds work best when they have dedicated revenue streams - like oil and gas revenues. (See Norway's fund for example. The most successful in the world. This one does not.
2. Sovereign wealth funds are meant to focus on growing wealth (thus their name). Investing in new projects with unproven revenue streams is the exact opposite. Sovereign fund are not venture capital firms.
3. Using taxpayer dollars, when running massive annual deficits, to create a new fund makes no sense. Which sectors have excess profits right now that could be tapped to seed this fund? Oil and gas companies like TC Energy, Cenovus Energy and banks like RBC. Excess profit tax is a great source of seed money.

4. We already have too many government agencies willing and being redirected to fund fossil fuel and mining pet projects. The government's own media release lists them: Canada Infrastructure Bank/ Banque de 'infrastructure du Canada, Export Development Canada | Exportation et développement Canada, the BDC (Business Development Corporation of Canada), the Canada Indigenous Loan Guarantee Corporation. We don't need another subsidy corporation.
5. There are no details on where future funds will come from. So there is no long term vision for this fund. Sovereign funds have a long term plan because they are meant for the long term.
