work on Hunaxi Mura is paused because a friend pointed out I'd forgotten entirely about Ourania and so now I have entered a fey mood about it. The Orania (spelling variations are good!!) cult is on the outs in modern Pent for entirely political and historic reasons. this will change with Sheng.

They failed to predict Teb’s inability to conquer Pent or the depths to which he would sink, and they further failed to predict the Great Catastrophes which struck the world around Pent. Their final failure of the Second Age, when they proved unable to either predict the rise of Senbar nor able to bind the dread demons which emerged from it, broke much of their remaining power. They had been unable to maintain the true wisdom of Orania, blinded by a light too pure for them. In the years since, the cult has dwindled, and while it retains a high social rank, few women join it, and few khans seek the Star Seers out for advice. Their hostility to the rising Lunar Empire, whose Red Goddess usurps the rightful place of Orania, has also led to their more recent political weakening in the richer lands in western Pent, where the Red Goddess’ missionaries are most common.

This will soon change. The first to foresee the birth of the Sun-in-Man will be the Star Seers, who will do what they can to prepare the Pentans for the arrival of Sheng Seleris. They will be the first to recognize that he has become something new, more than he was when he was only the man Agartu Say. Change is coming to Pent, and this time, the Star Seers hope their visions of what is to come will not blind them.

Just got out of an exhibition of Beyond Monet/Beyond Van Gogh, which was advertised to me as an immersive art experience. I cannot recommend it and sent this email to the local production company about it.

I attended the Hartford presentation of Beyond Monet and Beyond Van Gogh today. The first portion, the informational and educational segment, was quite good, and I enjoyed walking through it. However, as I watched the animated projection portion, I found myself growing more and more angry and disappointed with this treatment of two great artists.

Their art does not require embellishments to connect with people. The projection idea itself is good - but the rippling water effects and colored lines along the edges of the art draw the eye away from the art itself and towards these animated portions. This was disappointing, but not in itself necessarily terrible. I understand the intent, the desire to present the subjects with motion.

However, when during the Van Gogh portion, the portraits began to blink and look around the room, I recognized the use of generative AI throughout. The works are able to stand on their own. They are good enough. This effort to enliven them with animation, and to make the faces themselves move, is not presenting the art - it is distracting from it, making it a spectacle of the animation and the technology. It is an insult, a statement that the art itself would not be interesting enough on its own.

And this is, frankly, wrong. The art is good enough. Monet and Van Gogh are good enough. I truly believe you do believe this, that you intend to present their work respectfully. However, I believe you have failed. I am deeply disappointed in this exhibit and angry at how this art has been treated, because it is, and it forever will be, good enough. It does not need your animations, your generative AI, to connect with people. It can be presented immersively without these elements which undermine the entire experience.

Please, do better.

Today's bird fact: Merlins are not named after Merlin the wizard! Their etymology still doesn't make a ton of sense in Glorantha but I am trying to change only place names in my animal writing.

Outside of breeding season, it will occasionally hunt insects or small mammals, but its preference for other birds is high. It is also noted for a special hatred of crows and ravens, stemming from its strong sense of purity and its ancestor’s disdain for the trickster Raven. It is said that Raven stole Merlin’s eggs at one time, devouring all but one, and the descendants of that single egg, which are all merlins alive today, have never forgotten this attack.

The Pentans are not fond of vultures, thinking of them as the grossest and most impure of all of the raptors, but cannot deny that as raptors they remain high-ranking children of Vrimak. Also, they're not condors. Different kind of bird. Lives south of here. Also gross, but less lazy.
