In 1988, Peter Lawford's widow wrote a biography of her husband with Ted Schwarz, The Peter Lawford Story: Life with Monroe, the Kennedys and the Rat Pack (New York: Carroll & Graf Publishers, Inc., 1988). In it, she quoted Lawford as saying that Nancy Davis's "goal was to be an actress; her avocation was to have a good time ... When she was sin-gle, Nancy Davis was known for giving the best head in Hollywood.

Did you know President Ronald Reagan won the Presidency by illegally promising weapons to Iran (behind President Carter's back) in exchange for not releasing the hostages until President Carter left office?

During the 1970s, conflict in the Levant brought high oil prices which hurt America's economy. Then in 1979, the Iranian people overthrew the dictatorship that America's CIA had installed to maintain control of the country's oil. Wanting to strike back at America, student activists stormed the American Embassy and took fifty-three Americans hostage (Chapter 31, p. 847). As Reagan prepared to run for President in 1980 against Jimmy Carter, he hired former Office of Strategic Services agent William Casey (a member of the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board in the Ford Administration) as campaign manager. Casey immediately went into spy mode, intending to illegally conduct foreign diplomacy behind President Carter's back to secure a victory for Reagan:

During the 1980 campaign, Casey worked on several tracks at once to delay the release of the hostages. Beyond meeting personally with Iranians and dispatching Connally to the Middle East, he also sent a campaign aide, Jack Shaw, to have lunch with a Lebanese businessman, Mustafa Zein, known to be close to PLO chief Yasir Arafat. Shaw informed Zein that Casey wanted Arafat to pass a message to Ayatollah Khomeini. Zein promptly flew to Beirut and told Arafat about Casey's overture. At the time, Arafat was on good terms with Iran's revolutionary regime, and he may well have passed on the message. In 1996, however, he told President Carter during a visit to Gaza, "You should know that in 1980 the Republicans approached me with an arms deal if I could arrange to keep the hostages in Iran until after the election. I want you to know that I turned them down." (Historian Douglas Brinkley was a witness to this exchange.)[7]

In October of that year, Reagan testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee where he failed to speak up for fellow actors such as Charlie Chaplin and Paul Robeson who the committee had blacklisted (he also failed to disclose his existing relationship with Hoover's FBI to the committee).^ Reagan went to work for General Electric in 1954 where he made films attacking the health care program for elderly and disabled Americans called Medicare (Chapter 31, p. 855). In 1964, Reagan made a famous speech in support of Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater, a candidate advocating the use of nuclear weapons to defoliate Vietnam.* The speech launched his political career, and in 1966 Reagan won the California Governorship. How much do you know about the President codenamed T-10 by the FBI for his informant work in the 1940s? I penned this "History of Reaganomics" yesterday after almost vomiting on my keyboard reading the hagiography of Reagan in my textbook. I tried to fit as much text into ALT as I could. 🤗

Reaganomics: It’s History and Impacts
The term Reaganism or Reaganomics refers to a set of fiscal policies that became the template for conservative American governance through the present day. This conservative ascendancy was possible because of policies that deepened segregation, resulting in white Americans adopting conservative positions to maintain their status above Black Americans.

Reagan served as Governor of California until 1975, when he unsuccessfully ran against Gerald Ford. By this time, Reagan had developed a successful strategy to turn white racial resentment into support. Emory

The plan worked, and despite President Carter securing a deal for the release of the hostages before he left office, Reagan’s secret, illegal offer to immediately sell the Iranians weapons once in office convinced them to delay the hostage’s release until Reagan was sworn in.
Upon taking office, America’s new actor/informant/politician began espousing economic theories that drew skepticism from economists and cheers from his wealthy political donors. Officially termed, “supply-side economics”, Reaganomics advocates dramatically cutting both government services for poor Americans and the taxes of rich Americans while dramatically increasing the country’s military spending. Among the cuts Reagan championed were cuts to higher education assistance such

Although Reagan’s policies may seem draconian to some, in the 1980s his folksy mannerisms and skillful oratory obscured the damage his policies were causing. As mentioned earlier, Reagan had perfected the art of exploiting white racial anxiety. In the decades after WWII, Black Americans had seen Eisenhower bulldoze their homes to build highways and Johnson lie the nation into a war that saw a disproportionate number of Black soldiers deployed. These soldiers came home to dilapidated ghettos angry at the nation that sent them to kill other poor people. By the 80s, the flood of cocaine from Reagan’s adventures in Nicaragua began to severely impact Black communities as well, providing him with a new opportunity to fear monger. The “War on Drugs” promoted harsh sentences for using “crack cocaine,” creating a backdoor mechanism to legally discriminate against Black Americans by making the penalties for crack cocaine much more severe than the penalties for cocaine use among whites. These policies directly contributed to the mass incarceration problem America now faces.
Reagan’s manipulation of the public was so effective due to the pervasiveness of segregation in American cities at the time. Massey shows that in highly segregated cities, even when job losses and recession cause poverty to spike, poor whites, by nature of being adjacent to rich white people, end up doing better than poor Blacks. This means that despite losing government services, at the end of Reagan’s term white Americans of all classes were doing better than Black Americans; America’s racial caste system had become deeply entrenched in society.
In conclusion, Reaganomics was a package of fiscal policies deeply regressive and harmful to the future health of the nation, enacted by a President who won the office by betraying the nation’s trust. His popularity ended up turning his tenure into something of a road map; today Reagan’s Republican Party has overseen an explosion of the national debt that would

ON MARCH 8, 1945, just two months before the end of the war, Allen Dulles, then head of the OSS office in Bern, Switzerland, met in Zurich with Obergruppenfuehrer Karl Wolff, higher SS and police leader (effec-tively the head of the SS) in Italy. Previously Wolff had been chief of Himmier's personal staff and thereafter his liaison officer at Hitler's headquarters. He was not a passive figure in the machine; in 1942, he had written a senior colleague in Berlin to express "his special joy that now five thousand of the Chosen People are going to Treblinka every day." Wolff's purpose in seeking the meeting, for which there had been preliminary soundings, was to propose a separate peace for the German forces and those of the Salo (Mussolini) Republic fighting in Italy... His motivation was the hope, nearly universal among the Nazis at the time, that Britain and the United States would be receptive to any development that would allow the Germans to help in halting the movement of the Red Army into Europe. And he perhaps saw that even the effort and any ensuing negotiations would cause trouble between the Russians and the West. On this, were he that clear-headed, he was not mistaken. Allen Dulles was enthusiastic about the prospect and described Wolff as a "distinctive" and "dynamic" personality.

Cautious negotiations were authorized by Washington and Whitehall, and Stalin was furiously aroused. But FDR, as almost the last act of his life, managed, with the assistance of General Marshall and Admiral Leahy and... from Churchill, to assure Stalin that the unconditional surrender formula still held and, specifically, that there was no danger that German divisions would be released from Italy to fight the Russians.

After a sober analysis of the options before them, the leaders of the Black Panther Party decided to organize a Marxist political party directly opposed to the American Imperialist Project.
After the Brown ruling, bouts of white terror continued to flare. In 1955, a fourteen-year-old boy that Fred Hampton’s mother used to babysit named Emmett Till was brutally lynched in Mississippi. Emmett’s mother then staged a public funeral in the hopes of drawing American sympathy to the plight of Black Americans. The next year the Little Rock Nine volunteered to physically put their own bodies within striking distance of brutal whites as it was broadcast on national television. Teens such as Minnijean Brown had learned the principles of Ghandi’s non-violent resistance techniques from MLK ally James Lawson who had spent time with Ghandi’s movement in India (Jacoway, 25). The tactic’s success led to more student non-violent actions such as the 1960 Greensboro sit-ins and the 1961 Freedom Rides. At the same time, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was also running the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) funded Citizenship Education Program (CEP) that was teaching both literacy and the skills needed to pass the tests administered when Blacks attempted registering to vote (Gillespie, 109). Up until that point, the Civil Rights Movement had become increasingly integrated racially; Freedom Summer was specifically meant to draw attention to the plight of Black Americans by broadcasting images of white students experiencing police brutality. While movement leaders never intended this to increase the risk of death for volunteers, that's exactly what happened.
In 1965, an FBI informant and Ku Klux Klan member participated in the murder of Viola Fauver Liuzzo who had been driving protesters home to Selma from Montgomery (May, p. ix). Liuzzo had been in the car with a young black man; this wasn't the first time that the spectacle of white females and black males working together in the movement had attracted extremist activity. White male volunteers were also at risk; that same year Jonathan Daniels was murdered by a Lownes County deputy sheriff in August (Jeffries, p.
183). Unfortunately, volunteers weren't the only victims of violence in 1965. Shortly after leaving the cult of Elijah Muhammed, Malcolm X had a spiritual awakening and began mending fences with comrades in the struggle he had previously demeaned. For this he was assassinated on February 21 (Chapter 29, p. 811).
The final factor that caused SNCC to stop using white volunteers was their realization that to build a strong community they had to raise and promote black consciousness. Veteran activist Gloria Larry explained, "It seemed to us a major contradiction to ask white secretaries to go among black sharecroppers and convince them of their power to be self-determining and independent" (Jeffris, p. 183).
While Civil Rights leaders looked for strategies that could meet this moment of extreme state repression, the Johnson Administration ratcheted up the violence to another level, beginning an all-out assault on Black America. organize and protect their communities from ever-increasing state terror. After a decade of putting their bodies between cameras and billy clubs, young Black Americans decided to enter the Cold War explicitly by denouncing the American capitalist regime. Unfortunately, this resulted in the group being brutally suppressed as the full might of America's domestic Cold War apparatus came down upon them. By the early 1980s the state had either murdered or imprisoned most of the movement's leaders. Kwame Ture (formerly Stokely Carmichael) and Assata Shakur survived this purge by joining other prominent civil rights leaders (such as Nina Simone, James Baldwin and W.E.B. DuBois) in exile, with Ture moving to Ghana and Shakur seeking refuge in Cuba. Other Panthers like Nile Rogers were able to continue the work of consciousness-raising by creating the new musical styles of disco and hip-hop that became vehicles for Black Power ideology to spread across the globe. Panthers such as Mumia Abu-Jamal, despite being subjected to decades of torture in prison, continue to write, teach and compose music from behind bars. Despite their best efforts to publicize the American government's continued campaign of repression, even in death Panther leaders like Stokely Carmichael continue to be slandered in American university textbooks (Chapter 29, p. 816), where a friend's account of him joking with female SNCC leaders has been weaponized to portray him as sexist (Greenberg, p. 129).

Stokely started one of his monologues. He led slowly and then began to warm up. One humorous slap followed another. We became more and more relaxed. We stretched out on the pier, lying with our heads on each other's abdomens. We were absorbed by the flow of his humor and our laughter.... Stokely got more and more carried away. He stood up, slender and muscu-lar, jabbing to make his points, his thoughts racing. He began to gesticulate dramatically, slapping his thighs and spinning around, thrusting his arm, silhouetted against the moon like a Javanese shadow puppet.... He made fun of himself and then he dressed down Trinidadians. He started joking about black Mississippians. He made fun of everything that crossed his agile mind. Finally, he turned to the meetings under way and the position papers. He came to the no-longer-anonymous paper on women. Looking straight at me, he grinned broadly and shouted, "What is the position of women in SNCC?" Answering himself, he responded, "The position of women in SNCC is prone!" WOMEN'S RIGHTS
On the national scene, the civil rights movement was creating a climate of protest and claiming rights and new roles in society for people of color. Women played significant roles in organizations fighting for civil rights like SNCC and SDS. However, they often found that those organizations, enlightened as they might be about racial issues or the war in Vietnam, could still be influenced by patriarchal ideas of male superiority. Two members of SNCC, Casey Hayden and Mary King, presented some of their concerns about their organization's treatment of women in a document entitled "On the Position of Women in SNCC." Stokely Carmichael responded that the appropriate position for women in SNCC was "prone."

Yesterday I stumbled across the story of John H. Butler, a self-made Black entrepreneur from Baltimore who risked his life to establish schools for Black children in southern Maryland from 1867 - 1870. The forty-six-year-old Butler, a product of Baltimore's antebellum economic expansion and free black community, had emerged as one of the most successful retailers and real estate investors and most prominent leaders in the city's African American community. A confirmed believer in the power of education to win the battle for equality, in 1867 Butler redirected his skills as a politician, entrepreneur, orator, community organizer, and fund-raiser to establish the first generation of African American schools in the rural counties of Maryland. Although the state legislature had refused to support public schools for African Americans, Butler understood from his own experience that in order for freedpeople to have any chance for achieving equality, they had to read newspapers, political flyers, contracts, and manuals, as well as to calculate bills. Though a determined, independent agent in his two years with the Freedmen's Bureau, Butler confronted serious obstacles. Not only did Maryland's white conservative establishment oppose the Freedmen's Bureau mission to establish African American schools, but the impoverished condition of the freedpeople and the limited objectives and funding of the Freedmen's Bureau itself also undermined Butler's efforts. That Butler was an African American, one of the few blacks among the 2,441 agents that the bureau appointed during its seven-year history, proved to be both an asset and a liability.
