Lesbian Space Princess (2025)

This is a very cute, charming, and funny movie, but it also feels like a teen movie about lesbians. Part of this is the humor not being quite adult, but definitely not being for kids (or maybe talks of sex is different down under). Part of that teen feeling also comes down to that it reduces lesbianism to penis=bad, vagina=good. Not even just men, but the penis itself. There is a "boss fight" against a sentient dick that cums everywhere that didn't need to be there when you already had strong male antagonists. This movie was very supportive of other identities, and I don't think they were being transphobic intentionally, but it was very shocking out of a movie where everything seemed very intentional. Nearly every shot is filled details that made me want to pause every few minutes so I could just read it all, so this was clearly an oversight that just made me feel weird about a movie I was loving for every other moment. Maybe I should just overlook those 2 minutes and move on, but I really don't want to(?). It gets a lot of what it means to be a lesbian but then goes back to this middle school understanding of lesbian sex 90 minutes into the runtime. I'd still recommend it, but just be warned.

Kick-Ass (2010)

More like ass-kick am I right? Between Chloe Grace Mortez's whole thing, Nick Cage being Nick Cage, and everyone allowing themselves to be different kind of dorks, this was a pretty "charming" movie. But outside of that it doesn't really hold up. The action isn't that interesting, the main relationship basically started with sexual assault, and you can only suspend your disbelief so much. It felt like the superhero version of Superbad in that way, but that movie left an impact; this felt like a vapid 2000s movie that wouldn't be remembered if it wasn't for the name. If you want a better comic book movie, go watch Sin City.

This is the Love Actually of action movies: too many characters, too many plots, there's somehow wayyy more romance than you'd think, and it is somehow all connected. Is it stupid, is it too smarmy, is it 100% pure gouda cheese? Yes, yes, and yes. But it's America baby and it fucking rules!!!

Thoroughbreds (2017)

This was a good movie, I enjoyed watching it, but I don't think I liked it. The tone set up for a crescendo where there was none; we were just left to sit in our understanding. This works with the muted acting, but it also made for horrible pacing. If it weren't for the chapter markers, I would not have known where we were in the movie. This also leads to there being very little tension; as the intensity of the plot increases, you feel as cool and composed as the characters themselves—an emotional state I found undesirable while watching something with thriller elements. Despite all this, the movie is rather clever, notably how the characters will reverse their staging at pivotal moments to contrast which one of our protagonists really has a soul. There is so much to say about this movie, it just wasn't for me.

Supergirl (2026)

This movie isn't Superman, but that's okay. Superman inspires us to be the best versions of us that we can be, and Kara is no exception. Just like us, she grew up in a world that doesn't reward this style of kindness, but she still wants to try to make things better. While Clark wants everyone to have the life free of suffering he had, Kara wants no one to suffer like she has; she will suffer so no one else has to. She tries to escape the pressure to be good in the face of tragedy by relinquishing the mantle of responsibility, but she can never truly escape it. It is when she is fully confronted with what it means to be powerful does she finally connect with Clark and choose to be better, even if it is in her own way.

My only real criticisms are that any Seth Rogan cameo like that will take me out of any movie. And the 2010s, Grey's Anatomy-esq, cover of The Middle over the final climactic fight scene made me burst out laughing for the entire brawl in a way your final action set piece probably shouldn't.

The main villain was a little weak, but a lot of that comes down to the villain being a plot device while the real antagonist was grief and the monsters our pain makes us. Definitely recommend, I don't know where all the hatorade was coming from.

Adolescence of Utena (1999) I know I'm wrong but I'm ok with that

The best parts of this were when it riffed on Utena and the bit where letting go of the previous rules and embracing lesbianism opened up a new world to explore. The rest felt like someone trying to End of Evangelion Sailor Moon. It goes where the show wouldn't, and I think that's a bad thing. Saionji is a pervy abusive asshole, but power of friendship I guess. The reality of the closet is held up by conflicting dreams and memories of existence, but also no fuck you. The student council conflicts their own motivations just because and forgo any coherence for concepts; they have instantaneous character growth at the last minute rather than showing us them letting go of their anxieties (*cough* Juri *cough*). Yeah dude let's do Car Unit 01 transformation sequence, let's have a character secretly be dead the entire time, let's spend extended time riffing on a filler episode from the show. It felt like it was making fun of art films for a bit and then it just kept up the tone. Beautiful animation, lesbianism, and hype moments/aura does not make up for a messy movie. People compare this to End of Evangelion; but EoE actually made some sense if you knew the show/were actually watching instead of CinemaSins live tweeting every moment. This just wings it and hopes your jaw will be too far on the floor from all the naked teenage girls to notice.
