We’re leaving Hanko soon, one of the nicest towns I’ve ever been to, anywhere. We happened to be here on the 120th anniversary of Hanko Water. The views from the water tower are incredible.
Stopped off in a very small town in Finland and met a gentleman who lived in the same Chicago suburb as me as a high school student 65+ years ago. This country has endless wonderful surprises for us every time we come!
One of the guides let our daughters into Grace Gifford’s cell to see the Madonna of Kilmainham. It was quite something.
Small-town Germany blessed us with a gorgeous double rainbow on arrival yesterday.
Rapidly becoming my least favorite city to transit through, but the train station is beautiful.
Claude Code built something for me that I've wanted for a while. Introducing SourceMaster3000, for rough-reading sources in a language you're not so great at. If you use this to produce a "finished" scholarly translation, you deserve what's coming to you!
I should lose my Midwesterner card for the ambrosia I made last night. I made my own whipped cream instead of using Cool Whip, which feels not in the spirit of the thing. Plus fresh pineapples instead of canned.
I think this is better than when she told her teacher, “I deserve points back because my dad is a philosopher, and he says writing IS a technology.” Not sure why I think that.
I just saw him in Waiting for Godot last year, and it was epic. He’s a talented physical comedian, it turns out.
My daughter with “Snails Space with Vari-Lites” at the American Art Museum almost ten years ago. Sad to hear about David Hockney’s passing, he was one of my very favorites (and hers).
Seeing @steveearle.bsky.social live for the first time last night was incredible. Some feel good, some blues, some Townes, and everything in between. I’ll never forget Steve talking about his sons and playing “Little Rock n Roller,” missing my own son.
I guess I was really meant to study Heidegger. He draws attention to the thingly character of works of art by comparing Beethoven quartets to potatoes, and I just go, “Yup, checks out.”
Our 13 yo’s view from the Ponte Sant’Angelo in Rome. She’s getting some good reps in with her camera.
Overheard while boarding: “Nothing like a transcontinental red-eye!” Meanwhile, my spouse via text:
Our 6 yo is in her Ravens best, rooting for the Seahawks. Don’t question it.
