Munnings frequently used canvases or boards 50 x 61 cm in size on which to make his studies. These were normally made en plein air at the time.

Many of Munnings’ early oil paintings and poster designs feature characters in Georgian costume. Munnings’ had a great fascination with the Georgian period. He refers to this in his autobiography: “This was the period of costume that I liked best of all.”

When attempting an earlier work Munnings had lamented: “I never learned how cold, or how mauve, or warm were the moving shadows on that white pony.”

The dining room at Castle House is currently hung with racing paintings and studies by Sir Alfred munnings 🏇 “I do love racing. I love the interest created as the horses are led around after saddling up…I love the sight of the members’ stand, from the roar ‘They’re off!’, to the terrific finish”
