My latest little art project! My parents went to Holland (Michigan lol) last year for the Tulip Festival and brought back some unfinished wooden clogs. Finally got around to painting them 😁
To match Ella's personality, I put her in the slightly more flamboyant robe a'la polonaise, which is basically just the a'langlaise with a puckered overskirt:
Either style could be warn with the bra and spanx of the time: the stays. The precursor to the corset, stays had the same job, breast support and shape/structure for the current style of dress. It's not really possible to tightlace stays as they dont hug the waist. They could be front or back laced
As with most fashions in all time periods, it still needed support and shaping, but this style require a bit less. Only several petticoats and a bum roll or hip pads:
Now for Chloe's preference: the Robe a'langlaise. Quite a bit more practical, the skirt has a more familiar circular shape and close cut back. Think colonial America (only fancier)
The other defining feature of this style is the ridiculous amount of fabric that makes up the cascading back. It nearly looks like a cape, but it is all connected to the skirts:
Accentuate the hips to a sometimes comical degree. Some extant gowns look like they were hiding big flat-screen tvs underneath! Those structured gowns needed support underneath. And so you get a sort of precursor to the hoop skirt: panniers (great for having pockets!)
The Robe a'la francaise is what most people think of when they think Versailles or Marie Antoinette: I spoke for Charlotte's Fête gown:
