Just finished Mixtape and, MAN, that was so damn good. To keep on trend with all the wild takes everyone's been making about it, I think it was better than Life Is Strange.

Esoteric Ebb is fucking incredible. Like, it's not only a worthy successor to Disco Elysium, but it's also what I wanted Baldur's Gate 3 to be: A fantasy game which presents complex thoughts and opinions about race, gender, class, ethics, and metaphysics in a D&D world.

NAPLES, ITALY

Naples has been continuously occupied since the stone age. Its Greek name, “Neapolis”, meant “New City”, which is sadly no longer true after nearly two and a half millennia.

Its history is a history of occupations. First by the Greeks, then the Romans, the Byzantines, the Kingdom of Two Sicilies (twice), the German Swabians, the Spanish, the Napoleonic French, and ﬁnally Italy… Yet it keeps going on.

The result is a city of contradictions. Grand cathedrals, bombed out ruins, and bland apartment buildings neighbor one another.

In the 1970s, it was still recovering from the death throes of WWII Fascism (both Italian and German), the return of organized crime, high unemployment, and rampant corruption among its political leaders.

It is also the home of pizza.

THE OVO CASTLE

The oldest standing fortiﬁcation in Naples, built on the island where the body of the siren Parthenope once washed up.

In English, the castle’s name translates as “The Egg Castle”. It’s called that because of a legend that the Poet Virgil placed an egg in its foundations for reasons only known to himself. If the egg ever broke, the castle and the city of Naples would be destroyed.

By the 1970s, the castle had fallen to disrepair. A small ﬁshing village sprung up around the castle’s eastern wall and it’s pleasant enough.

VANTAGE
VANTAGE. Your character's frame of reference, the sum of your backstory, talents, and the current fiction—everything on your sheet and what’s affecting you in the story. When a question arises about what you can do, have, or know, check it against your vantage: does it feel like a given, a stretch, or a reach?
A doctor can suture a wound, a thief likely has a lockpick, but a farmer probably wouldn’t know an actress.
Proper vantage opens up possibilities and gives the freedom to declare story details. Lacking it makes things more difficult, or even impossible.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE. You’re assumed to have the gear and skills that are a given for your vantage. This avoids detailed tracking and ensures PCs are competent where it makes sense.

DETAILS. Use the details on your sheet as creative inspiration—and limitations!—for roleplaying. They are player (not GM) tools. When unsure or your PC's actions or thoughts, play towards or even against a relevant detail. Update details as the story unfolds, announcing the change and giving a vignette to give it weight and clearly convey the change to the other players.

I don't really get immersion, personally. I do like that the silly thing can kill you and it is also genuinely frightening. But people like different things. (Also, I misspoke: I meant the final Alan Wake 2 DLC, which was basically just another take on Control.) My favorite bit is this letter:

Woke up to this extremely lovely comment on my RAD Supplement, which is honestly a pretty good summary of it. And I love That Fucking Frog.

A comment from Gigantic Spider Games, which reads: "This adventure has everything that's great about RAD: archival Soviet art/ads, clean two-column layout, bizarre mutations you can acquire, etc. What does it add? A monster called That Fucking Frog. Need I say more?

"Turns out, yes, I do need. Because I love me some mushrooms, and this adventure is chock full of them. The titular technicolor forest is something straight out of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, a forest of giant fungus that sits smack-dab in the middle of a nuclear wasteland. On the one hand, its constant expansion poses a threat to human life around it. On the other hand, isn't it nice that something is actually growing and thriving in the nuclear winter?

"Throw in three factions that all have direct connections to the Forest, several settlements at various levels of wealth, and a small dungeon at the Heart of the Forest, and you've got a compelling adventure location that will ask some big questions of your wasteland adventurers."
